The government is considering making broadband a basic right to increase internet penetration in India.

New Delhi: The Department of Telecom is expected to finalise a National Broadband Policy within 100 days that would treat high-speed Internet access a basic right like education and health.

"A new broadband policy is being prepared and will be finalised within 100 days," an official source said.

Under the new policy the government has plans to include broadband among basic necessities like education and health and work towards new legislation of 'Right to Broadband', sources said.

They said it is expected to look at ways of increasing broadband penetration as well as convergence of various technologies and platforms like cable TV, optical fibre, wireless connection through spectrum, VSAT and satellite .

At present there are different departments that govern various technologies. For instance, Cable TV comes under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Satellite related issues are majorly governed by the Department of Space.

The policy is proposed to look at provisions for providing affordable broadband equipments and devices for end consumer use.

The National Telecom Policy 2012 has set a target of 175 million broadband connections by 2017, and 600 million 2020 at minimum 2 Mbps download speed and making available higher speeds of at least 100 Mbps on demand.

There were about 61 million broadband subscribers at the end of March, 2014. Of these, 14.86 million subscribed broadband through fixed line and 46 million used wireless connection like dongles, mobile phone and other devices.

Still stuck on the 2MBps number like glue. 2MBps is like dial up now. They should open their eyes and make 10MBps the minimum.

I remember people bombarding the mailbox of the BSNL's person in charge to revise the speeds and it delivered results.
Similarly, a person whose business was suffering due to bad uploading speeds wrote application about how his uplink speed were not allowing him to conduct webcam meetings with clients and he is left with no option as only BSNL caters to the area.. BSNL did changed the upload speed after his case.

Any idea if there can be some good effort from the netizens to change the broadband definition?

When was this and what speeds changed?

Been a long time now.
Will have to google (furiously at that) to locate the guy's post where he mentioned about his story.

About the increase in broadband speed (DL), the subscribers basically were badly frustrated at being offered ridiculous speeds when the world and even other ISP in India were doing better. So the concerted bombarding of mails started and the SDO i think was the person who finally had to take notice cuz his Inbox was flooded 24 x 7 and was rendered useless effectively.

Both these stories probably will be on Indian broadband forums.
And i seriously hope that people again come together for the common objective here. Having the definition of 512kbps as broadband in today's times is such a bad joke, it actually has started to make me laugh. No videos on Youtube today can be run if one wants even a decent version (resolution) playing. People can simply state how vids for reviews/interviews are badly coming out and they cant make out one object from other. Something like poor conditions for webcam chats with associates/relatives abroad is impossible, to hammer the point home.

Its hopeless to think that even after Broadband becoming a basic right things would be any better....

We can see the plight of right to basic education & healthcare in India.. It will be a farce just like these two...

+1, and we will see scams on the similar lines.

Yeah, its like going to those places where they say 100 rupees or 150 rupees for unlimited food . But then there is a limit in which you can take consumables.

the only thing that irritates me about a 512 kbps conn is i cant even watch 360p without buffering intermittently. im fine with downloads as im willing to wait for it and tbh, i dont get much time anyways to finish the backlog of movies and tv shows. but when im home after office and wanna watch highlights of wc in 360p, i wonder if i should move to another country :p

All speeds below 10Mbps should be banned. All those deferred speed unlimited plans should be banned.
Just keep flat rate data plans and charge according to amount of GB downloaded.
All you data hogs should pay more. Don't understand why you people need to download each and every TV series on the planet.

First job is to make the right to clean uninterrupted power supply, then we can think of broad(or, narrow)band!

What use is a xMBps connection to a person with no power supply?
