bsnl broadband dataone - mystery unexplored

Hi computer gurus, geeks, nerds, technocarts,

Well finally i have decided to go for bsnl dataone broadband:

But as always i have few queries and would be happy if anyone can come forward and share his/her wisdom:

A little info:

A little info about relevant hardware in my PC which i believe may help u in giving accuracte advice (i got the hardware details through device manager):

"SmartLink 56K voice modem
standrad 19200 bps modem"

I think these are inbuilt modems on the motherboard also it shows: realtek RTL 8139 Family PCI Fast ethernet NIC (network adapters)

MY QUESTIONS:

1. The bsnl dataone broadband site says (among other things)

"What kind of PC do I need to run ADSL?

Network Interface Card(NIC) with 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port with RJ45 socket"

How do i know whether my NIC is compatible with above?????

(The link is www.bsnl.co.in/faq/faq...y=Broadban d)

2. It seems that i have the option to purchase the adsl modem from them or of my own.

Can anyone say what modem they provide and is it actually worth rs 2000?

Or should i go for one from the market? If yes which one?

Also can the modem be usable in case in future i wish not to use bsnl dataone braodband?

( i visited the following link but unable to reach any decision

www.dlink.co.in/dlink/...modem.htm)

3. Is the installation very diffuclt (seems so as they charge rs 500) or can it be done by me...plz assume that i know how to surf net and check emails only...?????

4. also the faq says

"I want to connect more than one computer to my Broadband line to share my internet connection. How do I do this?

Yes, if you choose the right broadband plan, you would be permitted to connect more than one computer. However, all the users will share the bandwidth allocated to you. "

www.bsnl.co.in/service...tariff.htm

I plan to take Business 1200 single user - it seems i cannot use it for two connections at home?????

5. What is a HUb and why it is used?

I know i am asking too many questions but i tried to contact bsnl

"Where can I get help about DataOne service?
You can call 24 hours helpline number: 1600 424 1600"

You know what when i press 1 after dialling the above number, the call says its getting transferred to officer and then disconnects everytime i tried in last 4 days from kolkata.

I hope someone will be able to throw light so that i can take the connection.

thanks and regards,

sunando

If u plan to stay with BSNL then buy the modem. Consider this:
Yes they initially charge 500/- but then one has to shed 100/- pm as modem rental and 500/- installation

One year cost calculation:
Installation= 500/-
Modem rental 12x100= 1200/-
+Service Tax(500+1200)x10.2%= 173.4/-
TOTAL............................................. ....= 1873.4/-

Even after paying this amount we do not own the modem :(
So if u wanna have for a long period of time then go get one or rent it.

The market walla modem costs not less than rs. 2.6k , and with BSNL u get it for rs. 2k only, so buy from BSNL

Hmm, they charge the installation also for that wires and the small connection (switch thing) and they check ur line for any faults, so it's better to pay the amount and get it done by BSNL staffs itself.
In case u want to do urself then its' easy and u can do it urself. The Modem has a installation guide.

Hub is a local area network , where a number of PC's are connected together.

Hmm, i have tried it many times but there dont seem to be much of call droping and they attend to ur queries. Some 3-4 times, the call may be disconnected..

I own a Data one connection and i think modem is OK not that great... Would have preffered the USB modem but never mind... The only problem with BSNL modem is that it uses external power... I have already fried two adapters... That's also because i have power problems at my end but still the adapter quaity is not that great...

As to speeds i think its great... I took Rs 500 home plan and till now all i can say is its fast...

You dont need to get the installation done by them.... Tell them you will do it yourself... Its very simple... When you get the modem post here... I will help you install the thing...

All in all its a good deal... But if you can get a USB modem for 2.5K i would suggest you to go in for that... And dont pay Rs 500 as installation..

Based on your answers, we recommend the following plan

Type of Plan (Postpaid) - Plan Name - Speed (in kbps) - Free Monthly Usage (in Units) - Monthly Charges (in Rs.)
1. Volume based - Explore Plus 1000 - 512 - 1000 MB - 825
2. Unlimited - Infinity 128 - 128 - Unlimited Hours - 2000

Tata indicomm offers 512kbps ulimited downloads but they are available in hours , like 20hours, 40 hours like that. Unlimited costs 6k i guess (asked b4 4 months )

@quick,
The unlimited offer may extend upto august (rumours) but that too only for early bird's like me :P
What connection u got now? If u don't have a dataone connection, u cant even have a unlimited data transfer till july also

NO! i don have a dataone connection currently
does tat mean "no unlimited" for me? :(

No quick, i need to have registered by march 31th. So even if BSNL extends the unlimited period offer, u wont be eligible for the free unlimited data transfer thing.

Prefer using Sify night time unlimited types.

Unlimited as in 150Mb per day cap, right? Thats what they told me when I contacted Sify customer care here in Pune. and the one-time fee is 3500/- non refundable. :@

Btw how are the download speeds? and what plan have you got? 128 or 256?

My Sify conn is unlimited. No cap. And juss 500/-. You guys talking abt 256 kbps ones? as i have 48 kbps.

With A Hub The Bandwidth Available Will Get Distributed Among All The Users. It Is Better To Get A Switch Instead. Hubs Are Also Obsolete Now A Days

Well the nighttime connections have no limit on them.
I use the 128kbps, people tell me 256 is better (heard it online), but the timing is no good.
