bsnl broadband dataone - mystery unexplored

hey drgrudge, switch and other members,

first of all my sincerest apologies for not being able to reply in a timely manner due to circumstances beyond my control.

u know what i went to bsnl local office to apply for dataone and guess what, in kolkata they r not supplying modem any more (atleast for the area which falls in my jurisdiction) and they have asked me to purchase any standard adsl modem.

They will however provide the installation.

Now please first guide me as to which adsl modem should i purchase.

I want to purchase a nice one and something which is reasonable cost.

anxiously Waiting for ur reply,

thanks

I havent seacrched the market as of yet but my advise to you would be go to your local hardware market and look for the options available and then post here with what is available there cause there are too many and that would confuse you a lot. So come up with a list of ones which are available first and then we would suggest you the best in that :)...

:ashamed: hi switch first of all thank u you very very much for ur reply, but dear buddy there r so many available and the shopkeeper says that specify company or model...

to draw an analogy at what i am looking...say we all know that there are many types of search engines like yahoo, google, rediff etc

but we use google...

same way plz suggest adsl modem which is compatible with bsnl dataone and costs reasonably....

thanks dear

Look for a ADSL 2+ modem and it doesnt matter weather its a USB Based or ethernet based.... Also ask BSNL that if they are not offering the moodem then which modems are they supporting... Anyways you have to look for ADSL 2+ modem...

I am a novice at this but what i can know is this that a modem stands for a modulater and a demodulator... So the basic function of the modem is to Convert Data packets into digital transmissions of 1's and 0's... Now i beleive evry DSL modem would be able to do that... But there is a newer standard which has come which is ADSL 2+ and is suppoted by BSNL. What you need to do is look in for a D-link or a Beetel ADSL modem. I beleive D-Link's would be easily available. For a beetel contact Airtel people maybe they would be able to help you.

You can also lookin for a router modem. It would cost you more but it would help you if you are plaiing to hook up multiple PC's...

"Look for a ADSL 2+ modem"

Thanks a lot...buddy...i will keep in mind that term...

"and it doesnt matter weather its a USB Based or ethernet based...."

ok but just keep in mind i want to connect it to another computer in my home also...

"Also ask BSNL that if they are not offering the moodem then which modems are they supporting... "

The people at the bsnl office have no idea...they say any adsl approved standrad modem...

"You can also lookin for a router modem. It would cost you more but it would help you if you are plaiing to hook up multiple PC's..."

yes i am lokking to hook up two computers...

so can i request u to suggest me the exact company and model number as most of the things are going over my head...

thanks a million tonnes...

regards

:)

This is something i found on the Dlink website...

Just go through this page...

Its ASDL... It has both interfaces(Ethernet & USB) and It can connect two computers togather...

P.S. There is this one listed at ebay... You might wanna check it out... The same modem which BSNL gives and its good... Me personally using it...

Found this too. This is a Zxyel USB modem. Dont know much about it.

hey thanks for the link man...

"P.S. There is this one listed at ebay... You might wanna check it out... The same modem which BSNL gives and its good... Me personally using it..."

really thanks for the link buddy...but i am thinking of buying a fresh modem as the price difference is nearly 700 rs when compared with ebay one...

i know some people who have had horrible experiences of products purchased through ebay in terms of working etc....

better i be on safe side and buy i new product rather than a used one...

thanks again for ur input :hap5:

First and Foremost... BSNL does not offer a Modem.. What they are giving you is a Router with an inbuilt ADSL2+ Modem. The models they are currently giving out are

1) Huawei SmartAXMT880
2) Huawei SmartAXMT800
3) UTStarcom 300-r2

Now if they are not providing the above for you... then you should look out for an ADSL2 Router which works over PPPoE networks. Airtel Modems are PPPoA compliant and they won't work on the BSNL network

PPPoE - PPP over Ethernet
PPPoA - PPP over ATM
