KOLKATA: Come October, BSNL broadband consumers in Kolkata will be able to

enjoy hi-speed internet connectivity up to the speed of 16 Mbps.
This is nearly double
the current speed offered by BSNL.

BSNL Kolkata is in the process of upgrading its broadband backbone from the present ADSL system to VDSL which will allow maximum speed up to 26 Mbps in its internet highway.

German firm Siemens is undertaking the entire hardware upgradation for the transition from ADSL to VDSL. BSNL will come up with a new tariff plan for consumers who will opt for the 16 Mbps internet connectivity package. The move is likely to help BSNL consolidate its presence in the broadband segment where it currently has 2.2 lakh subscribers in the city.

"We expect to have the VDSL network across Kolkata before the festive season. This will help us to offer hi-speed internet connectivity as the broadband highway can handle speed up to 26 Mbps. The service will be offered to both consumers as well as enterprises," said BSNL chief general manager (Calcutta circle) S K Chakravarty.

While the present ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line technology at BSNL enables internet connectivity speed up to 16 Mbps, BSNL currently offers a tariff plan for up to 8 mbps. VDSL or VHDSL (Very High Bitrate DSL), on the other hand, is the next-generation technology which is capable of supporting high bandwidth applications like HDTV.

BSNL on Thursday jointly launched an affordable computer along with a bundled broadband package in partnership with domestic PC maker, Novatium Solutions. The PC will be available at Rs 7,000 with basic configuration and consumers need to pay Rs 315 per month for broadband, PC maintenance and a host of value-added services.

"We have already rolled out the PC across 16 circles of BSNL and we expect to complete the nationwide roll out by September. We are also undertaking trials with MTNL and expect to start commercial roll out in Mumbai and Delhi by November. Currently we have a subscriber base of 4,000 machines across India," Novatium Solutions CEO Alok Singh said.

Incidentally, Novatium Solutions has a similar partnership in Mauritius. The company is now undertaking trials in Thailand and with Comcast in the US. It expects to achieve a subscriber base of two lakh machines by March 2010.

Eagerly waiting for BSNL's revised tariffs. 512 Kbps unlimited for UL750 and 1mbps unlimited for UL1350 ??? Too good to expect :ohyeah:

if they plan to get 2Mbps as norms..

considering the fact that while 256kbps was the definition of BBand in India.. Maybe 2 Mbps mite be in the range of 1k or thereabouts.

Wonder if 1Mbps wil be available at all.. cuz if u define BBand @ 2Mbps starting, dunno what to speculate and what not to.

Eagely waiting for good news from BSNL.

Good thing is.. that TRAI gets the upgradation passed, state actors wil def roll em out.

Airtel can keep cribbing about loss of revenue. bloody hoarders.

EDIT: Jst like Airtel tried out FUP .. wonder if the Airtel users can press charges against Airtel for Unfair Bandwidth Upgradation policy.

Too bad no 2 way agreement on policy thingie while subscribing.

16mbps .... make it affordable 1st . no use of increasing speed when the UL plans itself cost a fortune

If I remember correctly, BSNL went from 256 kbps to 2 Mbps at the same tariff. May be too much to expect this time around.

Reason i mentioned abt the expected tariff

- 2Mbps wd be the basic connection available

- BSNL cant afford to price the basic connection steeply as that ll mean a hit on their already dwindling customer base.

They surely cant go with the same tariff as for 256kbps as extra bandwidth wil def cost them too, hence jst maybe a good news is round the corner.
