I have a 80 Gb HDD IDE, on which I have installed Xp and vista, The drive consists of 3 partitions,.
Now I attached 160 Gb SATA, without making any changes to BIOS, SATA HDD got detected as well, But when I Start XP I get a BSOD, and PC restarts itself.
The same does not occur in VISTA.....

I formatted the SATA HDD in vista using Disk Management.....And made 4 Partitions of 33, and remaining 40 gb each....

I tried loading Xp again, but still the same issue, it restarts......

I know that most probably, if I reinstall Xp the system will detect the drives and will work fine, But wanted to know the cause of this condition......also I would like if someone game me the solution of the problem , rather than me going for the reinstallation of Xp again.....
Also are there any settings to be done in the bios when adding sata HDD to system...

this always happens wen u hav a ide hdd in ur pc n u connect a sata one in xp, this also happened to me once. The only solution is to re-install ur xp.

Add your Sata drive as a slave, and keep your Ide as Master drive.
I have a similar config

80 GB maxtor hdd ide, and 250gb sata. When i added Sata, i added it as slave, it worked fine back then.
I only had XP on the IDE, no dual boot.

FYI.....:S there is nothing like "master / slave" on SATA hdd's
for sata hdd's whats more imp is that you have them properly detected in the BIOS and you set your HDD boot priority......

So if i have windows on IDE and windows on SATA , I can toggle both OS's by just using the boot priority from the BIOS or even booting selecting the Hdd using the F9 key during bootup. ( the key might be different for your system )

both u guys r wrong!!the BSOD is coz of the missing sata driver in XP, u need to integrate into ur XP installation using Nlite, or similar way

I have used XP from the day it was released and I dont remember ever installing any special drivers for SATA - am I missing something ?

eazy and myself never quoted any suggestions we were refering to some other thing in itself......:S :S i've never installed a driver for my sata hdd's in any of the so many systems i have installed or used ....the only time i had to install sata drivers was when installing a sata2 wd hdd on a old mobo running sata1.....

@ eazy : i googled and looked around and what i had to conclude is this.... the logic of master and slave doesnt exist on sata hdd's.....

say for eg, u have 3x sata hdd's , u dont need any jumper or any settings on the physical hdd , except for the fact if u want to limit the sata speed......so now back to the pt. 3x sata hdd's......the main hdd via which u boot becomes the master and the remaining become its slaves........same way if u boot via another hdd - the earlier master is now a slave and the rest follow accordingly......

in case of IDE and SATA coexisting........Say u have the Jumper on "MASTER" for the IDE and the SATA connected.....if in bios the sata hdd is on Position 1 , the system will boot from the SATA even though the IDE is set on Master. But if the change in the BIOS is NOT done then the system by default boots to the IDE hdd.

By default the system refers to the IDE channel 1st and hence if IDE and SATA co-exist the system will by default boot to the IDE HDD! if changes / boot priority are not done in the BIOS!

I have configured the bios to boot from IDE, wait let me tell you this as well,

I even have a portable 80 gb IDE HDD in a case...I was able to use it properly, but all of a sudden it gave me bsod and restarts whenever I plug it in via usb in windows xp, yet it runs fine in vista...

This may have been caused by something goind wrong while using xp...I don't know what...maybe both my issues are connected....

Also bios gives you options to adjust boot priority, so we can choose even if there is 1 ide and sata connected or even if sata and sata are connected....just if ide and ide are connected, you need jumpers...
