i have seen a lot of comments on forums on the opterons. and as far as i know, they dont differ from the X2. a lot of forums actually recommended me the opteron 165 (@1.8GHz, 2MB) since it was for 322/- to 350/- and it's capabiltity to o/c is very high. but as we go higher in the opterons the prices are too much for the extra cache. i didnt get the 165 so i spent 50/- more and got the 170 (@2GHz, 2MB).

now, the opteron 165 would not be available atleast in the US (dont know about india). but if the opteron 170 is, then i would still think that the it's a steal than the X2 with same cache. i guess than the lower end opterons dont make good server processors but would be great as desktop processors. anyone who know the opteron 165 / 170 prices in india??

please correct me if i'm wrong.

^ No doubt about it, the Opterons are a good deal. Even the single-core Opterons as well , since they come with the San-Diego core - while an equivalent Athlon64 is the Venice core.

AFAIK, no Socket 939 Opterons are available in India. Only the Socket 940 versions are available.

dude..
where exactly are u gettin a x850xt PCI-e for 200$
its atleast 350$...
u sure its a x850xt>

that's the ATI employee discount. :D. unfortunately, it's not on the newest cards. duh.

Went to laminton road. Here is what I have been quoted

CPU and MOBO (AMD 3200+ ASUS A8NE) = 41,950/- (INR)

2X512 mb DDR 400MhZ ram = 4700/- (INR)

Server Cabinet = 7850/- (INR)

Now do I need the “server cabinet” this expensive … what about the VIP cabinet .. heard it was around 4K worth.

Is this config ok for most games .. remember that I will be getting a ATI x850x 256 mb pci express card soon, and already have a 80GB SATA barracuda HDD.

Any suggestions

Is this a typo ? No way the two can be anywhere near 40K.

A64 3200+ ~ Rs. 8K max

Asus A8N-E ~ Rs. 6.6K

Total ~ 14.6K

As for the RAM, get the TwinMos since they come with a 3yr warranty as well, and have some headroom in case you want to overclock.

For the cabinet, which make is this "server cabinet"? For 8K you could get a very good Antec cabinet with an Antec PSU as well. Power is one thing you should not compromise on since you have a high-end graphics card.

instead of the 18xx, 78xx would be better. ati is phasing them the 18xx series out (read somewhere maybe anandtech).
