I see some mobo's that say "supports Raid" but doesn't indicate levels. How do I know for sure? On the one's that do, is there anything special required of the hard drive other than having 2. My understanding is if the mobo bios has the settings to configure, then the mobo supports it and it will mirror accross any drive that the mobo supports. Am I correct?

Any help is greatlyyyyyy appreciated.

its generally mentioned on the box in which the mobo came in.Yesmif the BIOS shows RAID then the mobo will support it.Its usually mentioned in the same screen in the bios which modes it supports.

I am looking at mobo info & specs online and I can download the manual so that's good. How about HDD's, does it mater if I use SCSI, SATA or EIDE?

it depends on whether your motherboard supports IDE/SATA/SCSI RAID.Most modern ones support SATA RAID but only a few do IDE/SCSI RAID.

So if ur mobo supports it,u dont need need anything extra to setup RAID except normal HDDs.

I'm looking at an ECS C19A SLI mobo and it says:

Serial ATA RAID Support
The C19-A SLI supports the Serial ATA II technology through the Serial ATA interfaces. Doubles bus bandwidth which provides blazingly high disk performance, up to 3.0Gb/s, with RAID 0,1,0+1,5 solutions

This what raid setup on bios screen looks like in the manual:

RAID Enable
SATA 1 Primary RAID [Disabled]
SATA 1 Secondary RAID [Disabled]
SATA 2 Primary RAID [Disabled]
SATA 2 Secondary RAID [Disabled]

As long as I use Sata drives I'll be okay. Correct?

Thank you very much for helping me out. It's nice to know there are folks out there willing to help out. I have built a lot of systems but just ventured into raid server for business and wanted to make sure I was planning things right. Thanks again. Now I'm not sure if I should or how to delete this thread.

naah...just leave it.itll be usefull for any one looking for the same stuff. If u want more info on RAID,see this wikipedia entry

PS:Welcome to TE! Why dont u share ur knowledge with others by actively participating in the forums as u say u have experiance in building systems!

Funny you mentioning that. I have considered writing an in depth how to guide or maybe a book once I know it all, LOL. It's hard to find detailed information on specific subjects on the net, everything seems to be vague. Thats why I decided to get answers here. Fortunately but unfortunately I am a business owner who's business owns them at the present but I would love to help out anyone when time permits.

Wikipedia is ur best bet if u wanna know the innards of things. For specific stuff,Google is ur best friend ;)
