the only solution for this i feel is load steam and disconnect the net connection i.e remove the cable frm the back this is one way u can avoid the updating or just disable the net connection frm control panel and be sure to keep the steam in offline mode or somthing.

Holy hell, why? Steam isn't spyware or malware and eats little system resources. that's clearly going overboard. If one dislikes steam that much, I think it's more advisable to just Uninstall it.

Dear Steam Fanbois, why don't you read the OP

He appreciates steam for their innovation and all that jazz, but doesnt like the fact that steam client goes online of its own voilition even when explicitly set not to do so.

This amounts to near malware behavior.

I can absolutely not understand how can someone even try to justify this?

^^ Looking at all this shit, wonder why would anyone go through a pain of buying a legit copy ...

Sure I want to support the good game developers, but not at the cost of ruining my gaming experience...

And I am totally with the parent poster. I leave my home at 6:45 in the morning come back at 9-9:30 leaving just 1/2 hr for entertainment...

lol.. He is just pointing out a method to stop steam from auto updating even when the auto-update is off. Whats it got to do with like/dislike of steam and I dont understand why you even wanna bother defending steam like that. :P People are purchasing the games not Steam. Its only a mediator for gods sake.

As for uninstalling steam, I think many people will do that if their game just installs from the original disks and runs without steam. Thats really an option that they should have given.

Steam is good in concept, a game content pusher akin to a water line & tap.
But in execution, it's more like a tap that delivers water drip by drip wasting lots of time and can't be stopped either forcing the users to just sit their with their hands cupped for hours :P

I can run out to the store and buy a prepackaged bottle of mineral water faster.

i never said i dislike steam but infact like the entire steam idea its a small step to stop piracy although the most money is made by them in the western market and countries like china japan and all hardly 10% of ppl frm pakistan or india together would have bought the legit copy. the whole idea of this is good.
i support steam all the way.:hap2:

i feel its a mountain out of a molehill . i personally never had that dire issues and if you think we get the 5 pack game for 20 USD or less for the same experience that other people in the world are having .

Going legit is good . and as someone said , you can always warez your copy of the offline game so as to get some convinience .

Maybe thats because you have a 2 mbps connection!!!

What he said, but shorter... concept is good, implementation sad.

An application calls home even after being specifically setup not to do so...

That reeks so spywarish/malwarish

Classic g33k double standards.... :bshit:

When a Sony drops a DRM rootkit, they cry foul (not that I condone it in any way)...when Steam calls home even after disabling updates, people come with vague reasons in support of steam

the debate over steam never seems to end. and i don't understand why.

there are legitimate concerns about steam. this offline/not offline issue, lack of proxy support, hell even the security of your sensitive data (there was a report sometime back that maddox managed to steal some credit card numbers).

however...

steam is a part of the package when you buy a valve game. it's a given. you are not being forced to buy the game. if you choose to buy it, then you do it knowing that steam is a part of the deal. don't like it, don't buy it. simple. stop cribbing about how its a bad idea and how you would prefer the system to work according to you.

Awesome argument, just one flaw ...Coming back to the Sony DRM controversy, would you have agreed if someone said

you are not being forced to buy music. if you choose to buy it, then you do it knowing that DRM is a part of the deal. don't like it, don't buy it. simple. stop cribbing about how its a bad idea and how you would prefer the system to work according to you.

pirates rule :D

serioulsy. I wish it werent so, but people who pay for products end up at the short end of the stick. always

Those who pay end up jumping through hoops every time they upgrade hardware , or whenever WGA decides to screw up

Pirates get unlimited windows installs and can do as they please .

THose who buy their music from music stores have their music tethered to some restrictive DRM scheme

Pirates get to use their music whichever way they please

Those who paid for these games have to put up with the above mentioned problems ,

Pirates, just have to overwrite a certain file , and the problems are over

Why should i want to pay more for the hassle ?

I dont get it .... Do you ?

I really do want to build a case against piracy, but with companies shooting themselves in the foot like this , its becoming increasingly hard

I dunno why some people dislike steam to such extent here, if steam is kept in startup, then it takes shorter wait times, since steam will be updating itself daily. If people use steam occasionally, then well.. steam takes some time to update.

right you are :D

Well when HL2 launched the condition in which steam was back then was horrifying compared to what steam has become now.

It has not given me too much trouble for quiet a while. For me paused update is working just fine, though i prefer my games being updated.

As someone said above, you can alway disable internet connection for 2 mins, start steam in offline mode. and play the games.

Best way to avoid huge delays is keep steam running that way it has chance to update itself when you might not be doing anything on pc.

I prefer steam these days.

Its classic I hate i - I love it scenario. You either love it, You either hate it, or you start loving it after some time. ;)

I like the concept of having all my game collection managed by single piece of software.( Now you can even add non steam games to the steam list and use the Friends feature in any game ).

In the end, steam is must for valve online games. I prefer it for other games over popping in CD/DVD every time. ( And i prefer it over patched exes as well ;) ).

For me steam is not optional. I have over 25games in my account. Soo I have learned to adapt to it :)

And trust me , its getting better and better over time.

i'm a bit confused on exactly which sony controversy you're talking about, but i'm going to assume it's the rootkit installation one.

i hope you're not comparing steam to a rootkit. steam is designed to send data back and forth between your pc and the steam servers. and they ask whenever they want to send some data (eg. the valve hardware surveys). if they didn't ask you (ie send off personal data without you agreeing to it) then yeah it's behaviour would be like a rootkit. so far there is no evidence of that. and guess what, valve actually tells you about steam being required to play the game. sony on the other hand neglected to mention rootkits calling home. there's your difference.

and again, if you are so concerned about steam and it's behaviour (which may or may not be malicious), then just stay away from it. you still have the choice.

Leave your STEAM open when you are working, let it update the games in the background when you are working....

I mistook once by buying a steam game called "Lost Planet: Extreme conditions" for my bro and it couldn't been played due to this parasite called steam. I took a vow to never buy another steam game again.

As I said earlier your steam experience will get better from now on as broadband situation is getting better in india i have been using steam for over a year and back then i had a 64 kbps line but it never gave me too much trouble..now i have so many games in it including orange box and bioshock...
