Hello mates,

I am planning to buy a new HDD with the capacity of 500GB but i am confused about the brand. I searched here in patna for the WD 500GB HDD but i didnt find it. So i have choices left only to go with either Samsung or Seagate. The samsung model available here is HD502HJ and that of Seagte is ST3500418AS. What will be better becaz i want to set in RAID when i get another RMAed HDD[Seagate 3500418AS] back. Can it be possbile to put 2 different brand HDDs in raid 0 or 1 if the suggestion came in the favour of samsung? The retailer told the price for both is 2600/- and both have 5years warranty. Does Seagate still give 5years warranty? I am going to buy it today so plz advise fast.

[My previous story: i RMAed one Segate 500GB hdd earlier which was 7200.11 and then got 500GB which is 7200.12. Now this 7200.12 have 14 bad sectors :@ so again going for RMA. i dont want to loose my data so buying a new HDD untill I get the previous one RMAed in 15days.]

Thank you for your suggestions.

if u want to make raid array , get seagate .12 , its fast and good for raid . u can put any 500gb in raid with it , but both same perform better .

I might get flamed for this post but IMHO Seagate is currently making the crappiest drives in market. I had used Samsung hard drives from 10GB till 160GB and NEVER had a problem. I used their 20GB, 40GB and 80GB IDE Drives together in a single system that ran almost 24x7 for four years straight but not a single issue with those drives! (Ahh...those were the days :P). On the other hand I had to RMA a 80GB Seagate drive four times in a span of 6 months.

Then Samsung stopped selling hard drives in Indian market for sometime. So I played with all three other brands i.e. Seagate, WD and Hitachi and I feel that Hitachi > WD > Seagate. AVOID SEAGATE AT ALL COSTS! This is just my experience and people might have had awesome experience with Seagate but I would never put a Seagate Hard Drive in my system even if I got them for free.

I don't have any experience with the newer generation of Samsung Drives but if they are anything like their elders then you can trust them with your eyes closed. I would recommend...buy two Samsung Drives and put them in RAID. When you get your replacement drive from Seagate...sell it to some unsuspecting "bakra".

Thank u dudes. I hardly found reviews of Samsung HDD so I was confused about it. Here i have 50-50 chance. Hope to have some more ppl suggestion here. Its not necessary that i put them in RAID but I think of doing caz my mobo dont support RAID and I have to buy another RAID card. One more question, how much performance diffrerence will I get with 2hdds in raid against single HDD(assume both are giving their max(100%usage))?

I Wouldnt really recommned raid . i Feel its of no uses better buy WD caviar black and .12 series hdd which def boost systme performance. Wait Till SSD prices go down :-)

I have used samsung drives in the past and found them a notch better than seagate. Seagate quality is variable.. some batches are extremely good while some are bad. This is evident from their ever changing warranty policy as well. It varies from 2yrs. to 5 yrs. BTW has samsung started selling HDD in India again? and why they stopped selling it?

Lastly I bought Seagte 7200.12 500GB HDD which is only option left.

Thank you all guys for spending ur precious time to comment here.
Have a good day.

Warranty of available Samsung HDD is provided through respective Distributors only, so for RMA you might need to approach Dealer/Distributor counter only.

My thoughts exactly... Stay away from seagate...
