Car & Bike Buying a Used car: Need Advice.

I am looking for a used car in the price range of ~1 lac.

The likes of Santro / Zen / Alto / Wagon R would do.
Not keen on any particular model.
Want to buy it so that folks at home can practice and perfect their driving on this one before we go out and buy a new model.

A few questions:
Is it okay to buy a 6-8 year old car considering the condition is good ?
Will I get any of these in my price range ?

I have been on the team-bhp forums for a few days and have read up a lot, but have not been approved to post their as yet
What's the point of joining a forum and having to wait for a month or more before being able to post a query (for which I actually joined in the first place :ashamed: )

Please post about people you might know who want to sell their car in Mumbai, preferably around Dadar / Sion.
Also post if you know any good agents.

Thanks.

I recently bought a low mileage (3.2K) 07 Alto LXI from Maruti TrueValue...

Condition : Almost brand new !

Experience : Satisfactory !

Price varies depending on how old the car is and its kms reading...

For 1Lac you can only get a +5 yr old MS 800...

Suggest you visit your nearest TrueValue dealer and register your requirement...

I actually don't mind that :)

Also,
Just checked out a Ford Ikon 1.6 2003 model
1.6 Lakhs. Decent condition. How's the deal ?

Santro 2003 model. 2 lakhs ?

1L should get you m800/zen/alto even old esteems.

my pick of the lot should be a zen/alto vxi.

remember to look for the i at the end of the model ( VXi , LXi) etc - they're the versions with power steering.True value is good, but if you are willing to gamble , try private sellers too :)

no problems with sedans. I started with Toyota Qualis.
Sedans, SUV can help u to learn the Dark arts of reversing.

If looking for a cheap option, buy alto or M800.
M800 will be the most practical and very cheap to repair in case of small accident. esp cheap bumpers and head-tail lights.
Zen estilo has very low resale value coz new ones are coming with huge discounts.

You'll have a tough time finding an alto vxi !

only lx & lxi models available in the uc market !

" True value is good, but if you are willing to gamble "

Huh?

Well, If you know how to bargain, you shouldn't have a problem !

Moreover, prices are worth it considering the final condition of the car before delivery and you also get 1yr warranty with 3 free services directly from Maruti...

Private sellers will offer lesser prices but you don't get the kinda support mentioned above..

Don't be fooled by the price !

Ikon's have poor resale value and unless your desperately in the need of a sedan, give this a miss !

forget the resale value, they cost a bomb to maintain. My manager picked up an ikon 1.6 for 1.2L, but has spent some 60k on repairs alone. Its still needs some parts worth 30k to be changed (busted exhaust, ignition coil) ,about which he's dragging his feet...

Point noted. The Ikon's best avoided.

How about an Indigo 2004 model for 1.9L ?

Guess your friend picked up a lemon.. My friend has a 1.3 and my cousin a 1.6 (4 year old car bought second hand) and more or less both havent had any major issues or needed anything than what would be needed usually.
