PC Peripherals Buying and assembling dilemma

Hello guys,

This post might be stupid but I am seriously conflicted about this.

First up, I havent assembled any system so far. That said I was planning to get stuff from SP road this saturday and then looking at the motherboard manual and assembling them into place. But is this easier said than done?

Also, if I had to assemble everything myself then I was planning to buy from a lot of shops and then assemble everything myself. But if I have to get it done from the shop, then I was planning to go for Golchaa. What do you guys recommend?

Get some friend who knows how to assemble computers to help you since its your first time.

I think the hardest part for me when I first assembled a PC was to fit the processor and heatsink. Rest all is simple wire connections ( although read the manuals carefully ) and some fastening screws here and there.

Thats my take on it.

PS: I was tired of the shabby work the computer vendors did on the assembling job >:-| . DIY was better :)

where do u stay,.......i love to get my hands dirt but only on sunday.:bleh:

And dont let shop guys touch ur high end stuff.....one assembly guy scratched my frnds HAf 922 in a hurry and made it fall. not to mention lot of small stuff got "lost"

Word of advice, get someone who knows how to assemble the rig properly and observe. Don't just get anyone. Just because one can put a rig together, doesn't mean he knows how to put it together properly. There was a case of a guy who's true120e fell on his 4850 and broke ? I don't recall the "incident" properly, but for his own convenience, blamed it on the weight of the cooler, but later after some basic probing, he didn't use the proper screws and backplate that was meant to be used.

You might not learn everything overnight, but usually its a good way to start. I learnt about assembling rigs by dissembling one. You can watch couple of assembling vids. It won't teach you everything and teach you properly, but yeah it does give you couple of "2 cent" advices every now and then. Where to see such vids? google and youtube exist for a reason.

@OP:

You can choose any of the three:

1. Get it done by some shop guy (observe closely) and pay him.

2. Ask a friend to do it.

3. Do it your self.

(3) is the best option. Before you start, make sure you have an active net connection. The manuals you get are 'usually' crap. So you can keep reading on the net, how stuff is assembled. Will give you some examples when I assembled mine:

1. The CM690 comes with all the screws mounted (like 32 of them) on the sides. The ribs for the drives and the expansion slots. No where did the manual say this. I was completed lost -- to where to get the screws. Finally on newegg.com someone mentioned this.

2. I did not know, that the motherboard had to be placed on 'spacers'. So first time I tried my level best to bolt the board down straight on the cabinet chassis. Thank god, it did not worked. Cause it it had, would have had instance short circuit. Then some guy on TDF told me what to do.

3. The RAM for my board should be mounted before the GPU. Else if the GPU is put in first (like my long HD4890), the RAM slot locks will not open enough.

So tips and tricks like this are available on the net. It is not that difficult. And is damn fun...! Enjoy..! Best of luck.

if u go to reputed shops tey wil assemble u for free.. KC computers( but this guy charges heavy for all peripherals) u need to stand n ask dumb questions while tey put up the stuffs:p..

Thanks god you told me about the spacers. Otherwise i was thinking of bolting down the board straight down. ahahaha.

Anyway where can i get these spacers for the motherboard? Does a motherboard come with it?...

^^

Cannot remember honestly. I think the cabinet has it..OR the motherboard. One of the two give it. No need to get them from somewhere else.

And honestly:

The amount us guys spend on systems ---- no ways would I give it to anyone else (even God) to assemble. My baby -- I handle it. :)

Cabbys come with the spacers :)

I would say take The Sorcerer's advice and observe, since this is your first time. Take some tips from them , and maybe you can try it the next time. Though it is pretty easy if you follow the instructions step by step, but still it would be better to spectate first. Since Gow1ham is ready and he is pretty knowledgeable, use his help.

Hahahahaha...that is so true....even I was afraid for the same reason. I honestly dont think these guys in the shops will know how to assemble properly..and yes given the cost too...

I dont think lots of my friends feel its reasonable...but then they will have to ask themselves...Is this guy a reasonalble man:):)

@vijayallenraj:

I find myself in the same situation as yours with a rig costing more than 65k. I am very nervous about it. Fortunately I don't have my motherboard right now, hence I can spend some time reading tips & techniques. Otherwise I would have got impatient & screwed things up.

Anyway, there's something very basic that has been mentioned on numerous sites (and surprisingly hasn't been mentioned on this thread so far) and that is, how & why to prevent static charge from your body to render your components useless ! I was taken aback by this simple step to achieving a successful assembly.

Good luck with your build. ;)

Yeah I read about the static thingy and even watched videos about it. You need an anti static wrist band.

That said this whole business is gonna cost me a freakin 80k...God help it!!:):) along with tax and stuff....And you know what its the Cabby, psu, ups which really boost the cost up:) about 20 k for that stuff...but given the config I guess thats reasonable...I really couldnt bring myself to go for the Core 2 duo and stuff....

Anti-static wrist band isn't mandatory, in fact there are some simple hacks, such as touching the power supply case plugged in, but switched off, at random intervals. Standing on a rubber mat etc. Oh well, do let us know how you go about the whole process. Would be really helpful.

sure i will...

I'll definitely post all pics and also I really cant hold back on my excitement about gaming with taht the moment it comes up....I will post a pic of Crysis Warhead on my 24" Benq 2420...yuppie!!! ...I already bought it today even before the system:):)

ppl never heard of 3d gaminf spl series fm view sonic?? Y ppl hav stopped buying view sonic? itz 22inch cost lil high around 12-14k but u wil feel gaming like u hav never played it before..

Hi Vijay,

I have been following your posts. Would like to get a first hand knowlwdge on assembling a comp. Please can i join you for the party. I stay in bangalore too and close to BTM.

lol , reminded me the first time i put a system together , it was dual xeons and the damn processors came with a very very very thin plastic sheet on top and which i did not notice and after putting it on , i turn on the system and it kept powering down , ultimately burning a processor :D , lesson learnt , next time remove the sheet

good for gaming -120HZ, but nvidia 3d vision kit not include and it costs 8k minimum + its not so good for movies and everything else according to reviews. It would be nice if the could improve these series.

Anway I am visiting Zapak seems like they have opened 3d gaming centres 60rs per hr.....wanna try it.:D
