Hello Friends

Need to buy a Netbook for one of my friend.

Have gone through some of posts related to netbooks here....acer aspire one, samsung nc10 seem to be the recommendations....saw on web emerging smamsung np20 (12.1 inches) but still not there in market.

but why no discussion about dell inspiron mini 12....

dell has really hit on the one major flaw in concept of netbooks....too small the screen size...12.1 seems to be the perfect balance....

and with the confi (1.6 ghz atom, 6 cell battery giving upto 6 hrs, windows xp, 1.236 up kg), it seems to be the best choice...and after all, its dell.....

News articles say that it has been launched in India (for abt 31 K), but dell cc says its still not available here.....dell India website shows the model (but no price)....

wat do u suggest guys ? should i get it from US ? (someone please tell the funda of dell international warranty....will i be able to get warranty here in India)

Yes, but what's the point in spending 31k in a "Netbook"? U could buy a laptop in that budget which is more powerful than this netbook.

Well, think before u buy.

thanks for the advice.....but i think u r missing the point of netbooks....

if you compare the confi value per rupee, netboks are defintely costlier than regular laptops....there is no doubt over that....

its not the powerful confi that is important anymore for so many people, rather the important thing is the portability and mobility.....this luxury which was previously available with laptops for something like above 90 K, is now available under 30 K with netbooks....

and i think most of people opting for netbooks already know the uses and limits of config available in netbooks.....so is the case with my friend...

my friend doesn't need it for running photoshop or anything like.....

simple plain browsing, music, documents, movies (don't remind me dvd rom here....most people download stuff and carry it around in pen drives (which also happens to be as cheap as 16 gb for 700 rs) )....

also with software as a service model and cloud computing as the future of computing, netbooks are logical choice.....

also, since its just the beginning of netbooks, there is lot of hype and craze around it...surely companies will exploit it...now its upto the buyer, whether to buy it now or wait may be for 6 months - 1 year....

also point here..is for 31 wht even in 28k u get a lappy...but battery becomes an issue......netbook give much longer portability in that scenario

Well my personal opinion is get the DELL only if its available in India.

I don't think an extra 2 inch is worth the effort and money of getting it shipped from the U.S.

However, Dell warranty is available worldwide just in case you think it is worth the effort.

A Samsung or an Acer do more than a satisfactory job as far as their netbooks are concerned.

Best of luck with the buy!!

even dell mini 9 or 10 doesn't seem to be available here...

hey man, are you really sure that i will be able to get warranty after getting it from US ?

on samsung or acer doing more satisfactory job than dell, could you please elaborate on this ?

btw, thanks a lot for replying..

if portability is ur criteria then how about the dell vostro A840 for 28-29k

i m just using this and its really light weight at 2.03kgs with integrated optical drive n 6 cell battery,

the speakers r no good though, only 1 con if any

u get the mini 12 in bangalore for around 29k. im thinking of getting one myself. i contacted sogo computers and they showed me a piece, the netbook looks AMAZING in person. so sleek and its almost as thin as the macbook air. the only thing im afraid of is the performance of the 4200rpm hdd. other than that, its one of the BEST looking laptop/netbooks ive ever seen!

personally i m totallly against buying netbooks.

they r just crap and they very costly for their config..

agreed that they weigh less and more portable with lack of performance.

wat guys if u can carry 1-1.2kg netbook, cant u carry a 2 kg proper notebook at almost same price and better config.

14 inch lappies r equally as portable as 10-12" netbooks.

BTW u can nver put a netbook inur pocket or wallet :P

so wats the fun.

or if u so obsessed with netbooks get the sony vaio-P

baaki bahiya aapki marji

3 year NBD warranty entitles you to international warranty.

thats about it.

btw dell inspiron mini supports only max of 1 gb ram. so think about that too.

is this 29 k for 6 cell battery ? and is this the indian version, i mean warranty and all....

agree with you on the sleek and amazing looks of this mini....

about 4200 rpm, dell could have done better on this....but i don't think it should stop u from buying it....

will check if mini is available with nbd warranty ?

about 1 GB ram, i am aware of this...but again it will be ok for intended use....

plus xp works really fine at 1 GB....

if it was vista (which dell initially launched with), i wouldn't have even thought of buying it....

Well, like one poster said, Netbook is all about portability and battery life. If you can, get one with a SSD drive rather than a mechanical HDD. 8 or 16GB should be fine and can be supplemented with pen drives.

cant comment much on the nc20, but i can tell u that the mini12 is one sleek looking machine. having read quite a lot on the mini 12 all over the net, there seems to be a rather mixed reaction on its performance. while most of the ppl are saying that its simply too slow, there are a few who say its quite usable after some amount of tweaking. im ready to buy this netbook... really love it, but the hard disk and the terrible speaker is the only thing holding me back. the max i would ever do on the machine apart from the web and office is to watch a movie, listen to music and the occational game of warcraft 3 DOTA. would this machine play dota at low settings? i know the mini 9 can play it, but the 4200rpm hdd and the gma500 chipset is something i dunno about.

I'm also planning to buy a netbook.

Not interested in Dell because of lack of upgrade option. 1 day you'll want 2 GB of RAM and you'll curse yourself for buying the right laptop.
Also, 30k is a bit high for a netbook.

I seem to like Samsung NC 10. Anyone using it?
