Camera buying new dslr suggestions please..

Disciple
hi TE..
finally decided to move to a dslr from my trusty lz10:)
i can buy from abroad or from metrogally kolkata.
i ve shortlisted a few..
budget is around 700$
if abroad then d5000 or 500d (both 670-680$ ish)..skipped the 450d because the price diff is minimal..
so opinions d5000 vs 500d?

but if i have to buy from kolkata things are a little different..then the max budget is 30k :(
either cam doesnt fit in..
1000d or d3000 left may be 450d
didnt like the iso performance of d3000..the 1000d is better at the same price point.some reviews say the 450d jpg output is very soft.

so 1000d+exchanged non IS lens~ 23k..i can buy the 50mm f1.8 or a macro lens with the remaining money
or 1000d body only 17.5k + 18-200 sigma from SS around 13k?
or the very tempting e-pl1 around 29k??
the oly is the sharpest of the lot even sharper than d5000 and 500d.
but i dont know if the lenses will be available or not nor the prices of the lenses in kolkata..
so please help me guys...so many options im really confused
i will be buying this month..
thanks

Get it from abroad.. problem solved.. :p

ok seriously saying... yes, get it from abroad.. coz then U can hang with a better camera..

if getting from kolkata.. first thing above all U need to decide is - whether DSLR or EVIL..

then only U can move forward on taking further decision..

Hi saayan
Good that you have decided to move ahead in photography.
Between 500d & d5000, its canon thats having edge in terms of specs though performance of both is equally good.it generally goes down to personal choice at the end.
Again ,between 1000d & d3000 difference is marginal if its going to be ur first dslr though 1000d i believe is more popular in india.however, some people just hate 1000d for its poor ergonomics. So again its personal choice.
Epl1 on the other hand is slightly different.its loaded with features for its price and gives amazing IQ.on the downside,it doesnt score well ergonomically.small body, no dial only buttons to be pressed repeatedly to change settings.again its personal choice.you can get it around 26k through jjmehta.mind you oly's lenses are few and expensive to date.
However, i would recommend 500d or d5000 to you.

In these kind of situation, we generally use to say..

hang out in a shop.. try using all of them for around 15 min each..

choose the one U liked the most...

this might sound silly..but works in most cases..

1. Never get a camera from other countries, unless they have an international warranty, As per my experience, a camera might give you some issues once you cross 5000 shutter usage, If it does not go bad at that point, then it will never go bad.

2. Wait in for some more time as Nikon & Canon have launched a new range of cameras like the new D3100, so by the end of September you should have a better idea and newer technology with HD recording (720p) at 30fps.

3. Lastly you can gather some more amount of money and go for the Nikon D90, as it has an inbuilt Motor for the AF, hence all (old & new) lenses would be compatible with it and would give you the AF Feature.

Look at ebay.in for pricing and availability.

GODSPEED

thanks guys for ur invaluable input :)

yes i agree..getting from abroad solves the problem as both are excellent cams..but it all depends on my friends date of arrival in india..actually i want to shoot the pics of durga puja which is in october and chance of a get together after a loong tym with college friends is very high..i dont want to miss a single moment and so i want a cam atleast in september and get a little used to it..

so will there be any significant problem if i get this from abroad??or it completely depends on my luck :p ??

if from kolkata the confusion is worse..

really hard to choose dslr vs evil :(

the oly s jpg output is absolutely fab + video and far better iq than 1000d atleast upto iso800(my personal op)+superior kit lens

i dont really care about the size and weight of cams because it will be my 1st dslr or mft..

but on the other hand 1000d has flawless iso performance upto 1600iso+viewfinder..

i can get a long zoom or a prime +kit lens in my budget..

do olys have a lens like 50mm f1.8 prime so cheap??how are the prices of oly lenses??

p.s

e-pl1 has a base iso of 200 and a shutter speed fastest 1/2000..do u think it may become a problem in good lighting conditions with a fast lens??

in dpreview the oly trounced the d3000..

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/OlympusEPL1/page13.asp

do u think 1000d will be much different??

i will be buying lenses later...so the prices and availability is an issue..i know i have to compromise :p

but in which way :(??suggestions..

thanks

you get non IS kit lens in 1000D, only in 500D you get IS kit lens, so no use going for non IS lens & investing for IS lens, waste of money, instead invest the same for 500D.

Better wait for newer models Nikon D3100 and Sony A33 ,A560 all within in your budget.

The Sony have in build image stabilization and focus motors. With A33 SLT better suited for videos with class leading auto focus in video. The A560 SLR has a whopping 1050 shots/charge compared to a canon EOS 550D which has around 470shots/charge.

The 1000D is quite old with not so great build quality and i found the ergonomics to be one of the worst in DSLR.

In the EVIL front the Olympus EPL1 is cheap and takes good images i would gladly pick that over DSLR like 1000d and D3000.

If you do buy from abroad and want really good high ISO performance then get the Sony NEX cameras which won the 2010 EISA award for best mirrorless cameras or SLD(Single Lens Direct).Ever since it launch its the highest selling SLD cameras in japan overall 3rd even compared to DSLR.
Also has a far brighter screen then it rivals and has metal lens, mount and body(NEX 5).

EVIL are camers with Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable LENs.

The NEX and EPL-1 don't have a viewfinder. At least not by default only as a accessory .
EPL-1 comes with the optional Electronic viewfinder and the NEX as of now comes with a optional Optical viewfinder.

Their is still no clear term for these cameras, but SLD term is used by some review websites like Imaging resource .
It applies to both NEX and EPL-1.

d3100 is 699$ , a33 649$ but no reviews :(

besides i dont like sony s aggressive noise reduction :( and video feature is welcome but i can live without that..

saw the a55 review great camera got the gold award but will not fit in my budget..

i really like well exposed crisp vivid shots..the d40 d40x..but they are old and not available and lacks features..my friend got both the d40x and the d5000 but likes the d40x more..

nex are fancy looking cameras good iso performance but again if i just compare it to e-pl1 its way softer..

i'd take the e-pl1 anyday over 1000d but its the availability of lenses and prices thats making me confused.

Well how many lenses do you plan on buying.
EPL1 comes with 2 kit lens 14-42mm and 40-150mm lens which effectively gives you 28-84 and 80-300mm due to 2x crop factor of 4/3.

As far as A33 well its the same as A55 but with a 14mp sensor as found in NEX cameras ,per pixel sharpness of these sensors are one of the best.
Below left the A33 and on right the sony A850 Full frame camera.

NEX takes excellent images ,the present favorite for DSLR owners as a second camera ,i taking about people who shoot canon 5d,7d and sony A900.They can use their existing lenses from canon to nikon to contax etc and sony own A mount sony lenses with the optional adaptor off course only manual controls.NEX also does in camera HDR and has panorama mode.
some really nice shots take from NEX camera Fun with the NEX cameras.... - The GetDPI Photography Forums

The first 2 lenses are easily covered by the twin kit lens,
The 14mm-140mm lens gives a effective 28-280mm due to 2x crop factor( costs around $1200),which is about the same as 18-200m lens. However makes no sense in buying these lens due to size in relation to the body.
In the prime you have the panasonic 20mm & 45mm lens which gives you 40mm and 90mm with 2x crop factor again they aren't cheap.

In the NEX camp the all metal 18-200mm E mount lens is cheaper then the M4/3 lens, its optical quality according to the first and only review thus far at photozone.de rate them above canon and nikon 18-200mm lens both in build quality and optical quality costs and is silent costs about $700 the same as nikkor lens.
