Intel's doing some spring cleaning on its branding structure, adding new Cores on the block. Joining the high-level Core i7 series will be the mid range Core i5 in the coming months and the lower-end Core i3's early next year. To be more specific, the Lynnfield chipsets will be either i5 or i7 depending on the feature set, Clarkfield mobile chips will be i7, and the 32nm Arrandale will at least at first fall under i3. Of course, with the new gang in town, some older monikers will be going wayside, and getting the slow fade out are Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, and Centrino, the latter being eventually marginalized for WiMAX and WiFi products only. Making the cut are Celeron, Pentium, and the ever-resilient Atom names.

So there will be six processor lines in order of decreasing performance:
Core i7, Core i5, Core i3, Pentium, Celeron and Atom

Core i7 - high end quad cores? Core i5 - Lower Level quad cores (Improved C2Q basically) Core i3 - Similar to Core2Duo's?

Rest we know.

With the die shrink next year, maybe core i7 will become hex core, core i5 will be quad core and core i3 will become low end quad and dual core. Pentium and Celeron will be low end dual core or high freq single core while Atom will be low end single core.

Actual differences between core i3, i5 and i7 are posted below (from anandtech):

Big news is that a new processor called core i7 870 is also coming:

Looks as if core i7 920 is going to be replaced by this model.

with so much confusion in the intel ranks is it now therfore better to go for AMD to be future proof?

Just A Query?

^^ Yup exactly AMD would be a better buy and future proof then LGA775,or may be i7 if you have the moolah !!

These i5/i3 proccessor will be out by nov-dec if i am not wrong and i dont see price coming down for the i7 so AMD surely is VFM currently.
