Thanks Drcrack, indeed the HP quoted by you seems the best VFM.

@Techie007, wow! you really seem to be Bond007 when it comes to tech. talk!

So, what I get is- 3GB is better than 2GB & 5xxx series processor would suffice for me & save some cash too.

+1. You got it :D (Caveat: ONLY if as given in one of above configs, you have to choose between a PC with 2Gb and one with 3Gb for similar pricing ;)) Else, 2Gb is more than sufficient for you if its cheaper ;)

I checked with my dealer in HYD
Inspiron 1525 without OS is at 37.5K !!!
who wants Vista anyway..
seems it's going to be replaced soon by MS new OS Windows 7?

MS is more like our Govt. they comit new blunders to improve the previous ones..

Consider this DELL option(37.5k) as XP Home u can get at 2.5k and MS office 2007 Student edn at 3k with 3user licences !!! still the laptop price will be better VFM than with Inspiron Bundled with Vista (42.5k)!!

Big thanks Drkrack, but this opens a whole new chapter in front of me. Should I not go in for a lappy with OS from company & which OS to choose- Vista or XP?

New OS ie. Windows 7 is expected in 2010 IMO.

Also, does MS office come bundled with original OS from company?

What is the RAM & HDD of 1525 mentioned, 2 or 3 gb?

There are many Compaq & Toshiba models without OS which come pretty cheap.

So, the big debate is - Vista or XP?

Vista. By now Vista is pretty stable, even if it did have a bad name in the beginning.

Never know when the next version will come :P

WINDOWS OS 7? According to the post in this forum in OS section by FEB 2010

But not very sure..
Vista got delayed by roughly 6-9months
but it was succeeding a very successful OS thats XP
this release may be hurried as it is succeeding the sucking Vista..

TILL that time XP is going to stay for sure.. In view of newer Netbooks coming bundled with XP Home !! not thinner versions of Vista

If u have a spare Genuine OS( Corp XP or something), Go for machine without OS option. dont use Pirated OS

the Office 2007or XP Home I mentioned is not company bundled, retail sale
if u buy laptop from the reatailer who sells softwares also(most of them will be)he can give u a good discount for the software prices

and also add Kaspersky 2008 Internet security with 3 usr licences 1yr for Rs 450/-

& finally Yeah Vista is Stable.. but MS dominence in OS business is under getting unstable !!

Thanks Techie 007, if VISTA, then which version to go in for- Home basic, Home Premium or Business?
Also in case of XP, which version?

For X, home is sufficiet.

NOTE: Officially, Xp sales from MS have stopped. Though if you get old stock with a retailer, you are lucky. I still say its better now to go for Vista :)

As for Vista, SKIP BASIC :P No use going for Vista and getting basic :) GET home premium. This has all the features you will need. Extra features in business are things like drive encryption (bitlocker) etc. NOT required for normal use :)

Thanks Techie007, I stumbled upon a new Lenevo offering, thought I would share it with everybody & ask for reactions!

Config.: C2D 2.0 (800MHZ)/ 2GB DDR3(1066MHZ)/ 320GB/ 14.1"/ VISTA Home Premium/ Nvidia 9300GS.

Price- 53k.

How is this lappy especially with Centrino2 processor & DDR3 RAM?

What are the advantages of DDR3 RAM & FSB?

Expensive config, esp considering your requirements were for a basic use laptop man :P

FSB and DDR3: NO difference in basic use.

Thanks Techie007,but I want to know what are the advantages of :

-DDR3 over DDR2 &

-1066 FSB over 667/800FSB?

1. DDR3 runs at lower volts, so some minute power savings. Current DDR3 is equivalent to DDR2. But its newer tech, so advances and faster speeds in future will bring faster performance in some time. No major advantages right now tho :P

2. Faster FSB results in more data being transferred, needs faster RAM too. So, more fsb simply means a better AND more exp proccy :P Again this you dont need :bleh:

@teche

I recently (diwali day) bought the Lenovo 3000 Y410 775792Q for 39,999/- from Croma@Bandra.

Will do a short review soon.

It seems almost perfect for your requirements.

Here's the specs:

Intel C2D T5750 @ 2.0ghz.

250gb

2gb DDR2

Slot Load DVD Writer Drive

14.1

2.4kg weight.

Webcam (Face Recognition)

Bluetooth

Wifi

Win Vista Home Basic.

Got a digicam free from Croma :)

Plus lenovo has this 2 out of 9 gifts offer until Nov-07.

Check it out on their website.

Thanks Techie007, that was informative.

When could we expect other laptops with DDR3, when Lenovo has already launched one!

@Raj thanks, yes this lenovo lappy seems to be a good bet.

Only thing about Lenovo is that Im a little wary of its long term quality & after sales service. I don't think so that Lenovo has a service center in Jalandhar.

Hi, I got a call today from a Dell executive & quoted the following Studio 15 lappy to me:

C2D, P8400, Centrino 2 based,

3GB, 320GB,

ATI Radeon 3400 series 256mb Graphics card.

Total cost with taxes comes to ~ 55k + 3yrs. warranty upgrade for ~7k, total ~ 62k

What do you guys think about this lappy, isn't it a bit expensive, or is it ok?

Pricing is decent for the config. Try bargaining :P They will come down somewhat ;)

Thanks Techie007, actually this price is with ~ 2k discount, additional VAT in taxes was waived by sales representative.

But, how much scope is there?

& is this the best lappy among the previous mentioned ones also?

Config wise, yes. The HP dv5 xxxx with a 9600 GPU is around 62k too :)

Thanks Techie007, so should I opt for HP?

Dell exec. said they would be hiking prices in a couple of days!

Also, 3k is all he is discounting, what more can be expected?

Turns out Dell has raised prices already, so Im looking elsewhere now.

Finally choice is between Sony & HP:

Sony Vaio- NS 15 G/S - C2D/ T5800/ 1GB / 250GB / 15"/ VISTA HOME PREMIUM

This lappy costs ~ 44k

Vaio-CS12 C2D/ T5800/ 1GB/ 160GB/ 14"/ VHB, Price~42k

Vaio CS14 C2D / T5900/ 2GB/ 250GB/ 14"/ VHP, Price~47k

HP Pavillion- DV5-1104TU- C2D/ T5800/ 3GB/ 250GB/ 15"/ VISTA BASIC/ FPR, Price~ 47k

Which of the above laptops would be best?
