Call of Duty 5: World at War

Call of Duty: World at War will utilise the Call of Duty 4 engine but the developer has also added various enhancments, such as the ability the burn down buildings and foliage. The game takes place primarily in the pacific, with the US forces fighting Imperial Japan. Frank Kearsy, military advisor and Gulf War Veteran, has made sure that the way the Japanse fight is both tenacious and shocking.

You’ll also be fighting as the Russians, who are invading Germany. With the Nazi forces on the back foot they will start fighting even more ferociously in an attempt to defend their strongholds such as in Berlin. There is also a new party system that will allow the leader to issue commands to his troops in single player.

Mutliplayer perks are also back, including some of the favorites from Call of Duty 4, but there will also be new ones that better suit the time period. The game also features new weapons for the series, such as the flamethrower, which according to OXM, can melt the skin off of your enemies and set ablaze grass and wooden buildings. You are also able to shoot throw materials depending on the strength of the material.

Treyarch is promising that this new installment of Call of Duty will be the darkest one yet and are dedicated to making the best game they can. They have had two years of development time, rather than the 11 months they had for Call of Duty 3. And this time they have specific teams working on all the different versions, with the Xbox 360 version acting as the lead.

So is this console exclusive ? I presume the next Call of duty title for the PC would be modern warfare 2.
There has not been any official annoucements but going by the past trends COD titles developed by treyarch have been console exclusives only. So this one shouldn't be an exception. Infinity Ward will obviously be working on the next COD title for the PC though.

I guess it will come for both consoles and PC but 360 being the first platform where it will make its debut...

Yes, but they cannot afford to skip the PC after how successful CoD 4 was on the PC.

And they seem to have confirmed that it will be on the PC as well.

OT: @Blade_Runner - You may be more excited for Fallout 3 though? :P

I think i read on IGN somewhere that the next Call of Duty installment for PC would be Modern warfare 2. Modern warfare was a hit as it felt so fresh and well .... modern :P We don't need another world war 2 game for god sake :|

Yea but that was 'modern warfare' ;). I dont think PC gamers are really interested in ww2 games. Besides COD 3 developed by treyarch was released only on consoles (ps2,xbox,x360,ps3). I could be wrong though.............

About fallout 3 well everyone's eagerly awaiting it. ;)

U're right; a PC title never made it.. :)

The first details on Call of Duty 5 have apparently emerged from the latest issue of UK gaming magazine GamesTM, revealing the game to be titled Call of Duty: World at War and set within the Pacific Theater of World War II.

Developed by Call of Duty 3 veterans Treyarch, the game will, as previously known, arrive on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS this fall. Publisher Activision had previously teased the title would take place in "a new military theater."

If you look at that link, it is specifically talking about CoD 5. It's from a press release they held. Official confirmation. [Look under the heading Fall 2008]

Ohh, not the world war theme again!

I rather they have a Vietnam depiction or even a fictious USSR skirmish so we could have had a chance at the then era guns /action..

But anyhow i suppose i will end up buyin this up as soon as it hits the shelves!:P

here is the news
It's had its Finest Hour, there's been a Big Red One, and most recently, the series has waged Modern Warfare. Now, the latest Call of Duty game will see the World at War, reports the UK's Xbox 360: The Official Xbox Magazine.

Confirming rumors, the game formerly known as Call of Duty 5 will indeed return to World War II, setting of all pre-Call of Duty 4 games. Developed by Treyarch--not series creator Infinity Ward--the game will portray US Marines fighting the Imperial Japanese in the Pacific. There will also be a "major chapter" in the game focusing on the invasion of Germany by the Soviet Union's Red Army.

Treyarch president Mark Lamir told the magazine, "The direction for the team was to make the best game they could, and as they were doing this they created a grittiness that quite frankly made some people very uncomfortable...This is a scarier Call of Duty than we've ever seen."

When asked about the decision to include graphic violence in the game, creative lead Rich Farrelly said, "It's not just gore and violence for its own sake, but reflects what veterans have told us and the actual history."

One of the levels described in the magazine--called "Maken Raid"--features the torture of an Allied prisoner of war, who then has his throat slit by katana. The brutal scene is watched by the player's character, who is rescued by US Marines much like the real-life Raid at Cabanatuan in 1945.

Based on the Call of Duty 4 engine, Call of Duty: World at War will include more destructible environments than prior games in the series. It will also allow players to swim underwater, as well as use Japanese machine guns and flamethrowers with "propagating fire" burning jungle scenery--and enemies--in realistic fashion.

As for multiplayer, the 360 version will sport a four-player co-op mode which can be played with four consoles over Xbox Live, or two consoles each using split-screen. The co-op campaign will be very similar to the single-player campaign, with gamers constantly accumulating points which can be used to unlock perks. Its multiplayer mode will feature vehicles and squad-based elements.

As revealed by Activision last month, Call of Duty: World at War is in development for the 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 2. The game will ship during Activision's current fiscal year, with almost all prior Call of Duty games being released in the holiday quarter. Treyarch is also currently developing the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace, using the Call of Duty 4 engine.
