as the title suggests this thread will be dedicated to LOTR books and movies......so start postin abt ur favorite characters, scenes from the movies and chapters from the book...........thanks to XT for giving me this idea

The movies ----- All Aragorn sequences!!! That guy was born for this role.

The books are EPIC. when I finished reading the third book for the second time, there was a vague kind of feeling. Like how you feel when an era has ended. Very hard to put into words. But the books were in a different world altogether. It transported you to a different dimension.

the boring parts were the songs though. I did not like it much.

The movies were made brilliantly. Of course, they skipped some scenes, but even then. They deserved all their Oscars.

The book, of course, is a classic. I don't need to say anything about it. First time I read it was during my final year submissions :ashamed: I used to come home from college in the afternoon, then sleep for 4-5 hours. Wake up in the evenings, then work on my journals / assignments till around 2pm. Then, when I was sure my mom n dad were asleep, I started reading, and went till around 4 or 5am. :ohyeah: Then I had to sleep before dad woke up. ;)
Then it was college in the morning. The professors usually took my files without a fuss, after seeing my red-eyes ( due to lack of sleep).
It took me a couple of weeks to finish the book, as I could do only a few hours at a time. And I too skipped over the songs. Sheesh....is this a bollywood movie? Why did he need the songs? :S

Incidently, this was also the first time I heard Pink Floyd seriously. I used to keep it in the background at a low volume. And now, whenever I listen to Shine on you crazy Diamond, I think of Frodo and Sam leaving the Shire for the first time. :ohyeah:

Ahhh, I could go on for ever like this.......... BTW, my fav chapter is " The scouring of the shire". Too bad he had to remove it from the film.

I'm in love with Lotr franchise. Both books and movies and even the games (The Hobbit, Two Towers and Return of the King). Have all three movies extended versions on DVD.

My fav in Lotr has to be Boromir and his bro Faramir. They wanted they could kick aragorn's ass anytime they wanted to!

The books..simply loved it. Havnt managed to lay my hands on the Silmarillion yet though.. :(

well i just wanted to ask that how many of u think the movie should have shown the last part in which when frodo and sam come back and find the shire is in control of saurman........

Yeah... they should have shown the fights in the Shire after they return. It would have been very good.

@Zhop --- whenever I listen to Evanescence - Bring me to life, I remember the LOTR books as I used to listen to that song when I was reading. It also reminds me o f the Galadriel scenes in the first movie

@Freefrag, I already said "The scouring of the shire" is my fav chapter. I had hoped it would be included in the extended version :(

Speaking of galadriel - Kate Blanchett :S Michelle Pfieffer would have been so perfect for the part.

The Best Part of the Novel...
"The Path of the Dead" :bleh:
The LOTR Novels and the other ones by JRR Tolkein are very descriptive. I have read most of them...and they are simply awesome.
Just to imagine such a huge ficticious world and put so much into it has to be the work of a genius:)

As for the movies....i didnt quite like them as i am one of the few who read the novel before the movie was released:P
And as for inclusion in the movie...Tom Bombadil part would have been cool:D
But, frankly speaking, the change in the story in the movie was not welcome by me at all...i was very very disappointed after seeing part 2 and 3.
Part 1 was still ok.

Aaah some fellow tolkienites here. Ahoy I tell ye!

My favourite book out of the Tolkien stable is undoubtedly The Silmarillion. Since a kid, I was always obsessed with mythology. I read up all about Norse, Greek and Roman mythology and simply loved the stuff. Then after reading The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, I started reading The Silmarillion. This book too is plainly put, pure mythology and great reading.

My favourite parts of the book? Tom Bombadil - there are theories floating around that Tom Bombadil is very possibly Eru Illuvatar himself. Here's what Tolkien himself had to say about him: "And even in a mythical Age there must be some enigmas, as there always are. Tom Bombadil is one (intentionally)."

Elrond said this: "(Bombadil) was not then his name. Iarwain Ben-adar we called him, oldest and fatherless. But many another name he has since been given by other folk."

What does he have to say about himself? This: "Eldest, that's what I am.. Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn.. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless - before the Dark Lord came from Outside."

Here's a brilliant essay by Gene Hargrove, read it.

Other favourite parts: Gandalf's fight with the Balrog, from the deepest recesses of Moria to the top of Zirakzigil. Then the meeting with the Ents, and the Grey Havens where they meet Cirdan the shipwright, a great Elf.

i loved the part in the first book where they reach the mines of Moria and Gandalf is thinking which path to go and he says "Always follow your nose"......he was the best and Ian Mckellen was tailor-made for the role in the movie........in the movies i loved the first movie as it was the only one which was almost accurate (they could have shown the barrow wights and tom bombadil)

I go through a similiar feel with Harry Potter and Blue (Da Ba Dee) song.

^^ listen to battle of evermore by Led Zepplin as it depicts the last battle with amazin lyrics and music

Agree with tracer - that the silimarilion has depth and to understand the lotr, its important to read the silmarillion..
I know i am a little off topic, but i don't know why people are not mentioning the hobbit.
Thats the book which is the prelude to the lotr, an imediate prelude.
The conversations with the dragon is beautiful and one of my favourite chapters is the entry of the bilbo in beorn's house.
I don't know if any body noticed, but in the movie when frodo is injured at the battle at weathertop and arwen enters for the first time, You can see the three trolls from the hobbit.
These are points for which i give peter jackson full points. Its not there in the book, but to get such a small reference in - to show a piece from the hobbit is genius.

I hav seen the LOTR movie quite a few times.. but havent been able to put my hands on the book. In the Triology Part I and III are the ones i like n my fav character remains Legolas. :)

hmmm......was reading the two towers yesterday and i found out that Elves can sleep even when they are walking, talking or are doing work.......wat is there which these immortal dudes can't do ? :P

Led Zeps songs include a lot of references to Tolkien.
Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Ramble On to name a few.
I believe it is the fault of Robert Plant who was an avid Tolkien reader.
The greatest band ever sings about the greatest book ever !!

I totally agree. I missed the scouring of the shire. Wouldve loved to see Jacksons portrayal of Sharky.

I also would have loved to see the breaking of Sarumans staff.

Want to get my hands on the extended versions of the movies. They have a lot more footage.

the most irritating thing about the movies was they were too short and had much deviated stories especially the second and the third movie......in the second book Eomer was not banned from Rohan he was just patrolling the borders.......and they should have shown Gandalf in a cloak and hat when Aragorn had first seen him standing far away from the camp the company had built which led them to thinking it was Saurman as their horses fled........this would have created some good suspense.......if Peter Jackson would have made the movie exactly as the book it would surely take 4-5 hrs for each movie......but who would'nt see it......and instead of 14 oscars he would have got atleast 20 oscars for all the 3 movies......i am waitin for The Hobbit Peter !!!!

Well all you need is the extended edition dvd set. It has 50 minutes of extra footage, which was not there in the movie. In fact if you have seen the three parts in india you have already missed around 15 to 20 minutes of footage from each part which is there in the original movie. The Return of the king is 3 hours 10 minutes on DVD. and in the theater in mumbai it was around 2 hours.

For two towers the same holds true. The theater editors, decided that dialogues were boring and have just left the action scenes. then made a 3 hour movie into a 2 hours there too..

Too really enjoy the movie you need to watch the extended edition DVD version.
