A good read about the cyprus crisis - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21937615
Actually it forgets to mention the London and 80% owned Moscow based branches were open during the bank holidays. So it wasnt technically stopping the main people (Russian oligarchs) from withdrawing the money and circumventing the capital controls. Only people hurt in all this are normal depositors who have no way to go internationally and withdraw money.

This whole system of DBT is such a mess. I work with SBI in Ratnagiri and we literally have been drowned in the sea of account forms. It is so unproductive and inconvenient for old villagers living far off to come and collect benefits. Many of them don't even have a mobile phone, so we can't even give them mobile banking / SMS alerts to give info about any credits to the account.

Since you work in SBI :), They are collecting finger imprints in a neat 4.5" size device not connected to any bank infra and works on battery. As a person who works in IT line (even though down to earth job), it gave me creeps seeing that they are collecting finger imprints, putting it in a plastic cover on a nonworking day and carrying it in BEST bus when the guy finished that day´s job. Personal and private information is handled in a careless manner here. Can´t imagine what all security issues are in stock in coming years.

I guess the bigger security issue wud be - 1. you never getting your said subsidies 2. government reaching into your pockets via the Aadhar bank account. 3. Fraudulent benami accounts in your name to launder politicians money with duplicate aadhar card and its linked account.

BTW, does subsidies work in a similar fashion in any other country?

sharktale1212, heard Japan did so, from one of my acquaintance. Japan Govt. deposited (some where around or after 2008) some amount in to every individual´s saving bank account expecting people to spend the money and accelerate market.

What I meant is some place where the government is refunding money directly to people's account - not giving them extra money. Something like the Aadhar wherein you will be charged whole amount and the subsidy goes to your account.
And Japanese government do some strange things.

Yes, i dont know if it was japan or some other country but it was made with the notion that people would stop saving money in bank accounts and start spending. That country was seeing negative growth in their local industries due to rising inflation from the last few years. The same thing might happen here too. I mean the part where people put more money into savings to beat inflation. Not govt putting money into peoples account so they spend part. Our govt would probably tax people more since they worry about govt income & expenditure first. People are last on the govt's list of priorities.

The IT department already levied tax with a retrospective effect on corporations (Vodafone), despite a ruling from the SC. So tomorrow the tax rate can be raised to 99% with retrospective effect.
