i have 9 year old computer with the following configuration. Is it possible to load windows XP on this machine. I dont have issues even if it is a very very toned down version of windows XP.

RAM: 128 MB SD RAM
Processor: 266 Mhz Celeron
HDD: 20 GB

Actually i tried doing so by fitting the above HDD in my newer computer and installing windows XP OS on its D: (C: already has windows 98 which is running fine) but when i attached that HDD back to my old computer, it gave me the option of booting into windows XP and 98 but if i select windows XP then the computer restarts

Please let me know if you need any more details and help me solve my query.

Well, it won't work like that, as the actual installation has the drivers and settings of your newer PC.

And why do you specifically want XP?, you could probably do better with 2000 or 98.:p

Still, if you need it that bad, then look up the Green demon for something called Win XP nLite.;)

nice reply for some good members...but..at this confg u cant do anything with your XP..all the application not work fine and some of them u miss too..so try to upgrade it atleast cel 600 mhz or somthing like this..it is the minimum req for u..not the best

Trying to run XP on that config would be a painful experience....though you will be able to install and run lite version of xp most probably but running application would be another pain in the @ss....

what the hell you are still keeping celeron 266 ..Man exchange your CPU with P3 733 at least with cost of 150RS only.Cost of your old CPU is in between 20-30 INR get that deducted from 150 i.e 130RS only for P3 733.Let me look into my store if i got one i will donate you for free.Enjoy XP then

^Actually such old machines can an serve as one of the most practical download rigs..Even if it goes kaput no harm..

SO stick to it..or sell it guys..

Or follow Superczar' guide to make it a server..

At OP, If you still want to use it for everyday tasks, Linux may come hand..DSL(Damn small linux) will work well on it..

Damn Small Linux, Download the ISO

Damn Small is small enough and smart enough to do the following things:

  • Boot from a business card CD as a live linux distribution (LiveCD)
  • Boot from a USB pen drive
  • Boot from within a host operating system (that's right, it can run *inside* Windows)
  • Run very nicely from an IDE Compact Flash drive via a method we call "frugal install"
  • Transform into a Debian OS with a traditional hard drive install
  • Run light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of Ram
  • Run fully in RAM with as little as 128MB (you will be amazed at how fast your computer can be!)
  • Modularly grow -- DSL is highly extendable without the need to customize

I did install n use XP on much lesser config than that, mine was 166Mhz 64 MB RAM, 4GB HDD. But yes u have to install it while it is connected to the old comp, u can't install the os n hdd connected to new comp n then expect it to work on old comp, it won't work on another comp with same config let alone ur old comp
