Saw this on slickdeals. Canon is selling refurbished T1i which I believe is 500D DSLR with 18-55 mm lens for under 300$
Please let me know if this is a good deal for someone like me who has never used a DSLR camera ? Is this kit lens good for normal photographs ?

To me a no deal, when used 550d are available for 22-24k.. 550d is a much better camera
Moreover, I doubt there are much things to be refurbished except cleaning in used rebels which are used by casual shooter and no pro guy

T2i (550D ??) is available for 388$ refurb with taxes. What is the difference between t1i and t2i ?
I have no knowledge about DSLR cameras. If differences not worthwhile I would go for t1i instead and save some money.

On a second note, I read few other threads in the forum about DSLRs and it seems to be expensive in general as I will need more lenses later on. I only take pics in auto mode so I might go for a travel zoom rather than DSLR. It is so confusing.

If so, go for advance compacts.. they have good sensor, fast lens and handy for every moment..
Believe me, after some time you will hate to take your dslr everywhere like party, family function etc.. it's just no portable

The DSLR route is a long road to just about anything you wish to capture with your "eye" and the "lens/Lenses" ..... as you journey down this path you would feel the need to keep adding more and more lenses/filters/and so on .... all adding up to $$$$$$.

It can be thrilling or exasperating (when you do not have the right lens to capture something that you just saw/experienced).

Compact Digital Cameras and Bridge Camera's (from 15x and going upto 36x) ....within a reasonable budget, seek to "give one the maximum bang for the buck".

Check out any camera you wish to pick & compare with with upto 5 other models at

I've added a Bridge Camera (Nikon P510) to your Canon 500D (DSLR) and the Sony RX100 (Compact) mentioned by another TE member.
