buy i865 chipset m/b and P4 cpu from the market (Delta in Chennai)and you can make a win98SE pc for far less than 10K (excluding the monitor). if long term support is needed buy 2 or 3 pieces of all the hardware as stock. still it will be cheaper than buying a new hardware m/c.

It looks like the Chinese rep is trying to trying to sell you some crappy software, which from your description looks like more like it is using some undocumented windows programming API's / techniques to run.

After paying so much I think you should insist on getting an XP compatible version and not compromise.

Get over with the trouble now than later..You can always get win 98 computer, but what when they conk off?
Ask him what problems and all in detail..maybe theres a solution that his chinglish couldnt comprehend..

BTw, thanks to stupid chinese machine makers i can sell my old pc with 32+64mb ram for a good price :ohyeah:

Thanks for the input guys. Very valid comments.
I dont go to dads factory generally. But I went on Satday and got the Virtual PC up with Win 98. The software is MasterCAM and is compatible on anything but the machine rejects communication from the Host network card on Vista/XP and hence Virtual PC will not do.
So, for now I have to get a Windows 98 PC. The manuals in the machine suggest that it supports DNC software(The chinese guy says he doesnt know) and so should be able to run from XP. We will have to try all that after he leaves unfortunately. Also, for now we are transferring the Gcode to a Memory card, connecting it to the machine and then doing the work. So there is some alternative and the machine works beautifully.
Thanks again. If you guys are interested Il post some pictures in a new thread.

Is it a CNC m/c? I think we had such a m/c at our workshop in Bombay. Was tough finding people who could program the m/c in GCode.

Yes, its CNC. This particular machine(For Engraving) runs on MasterCam. I am not an industrial kind of person but from my understanding the program is done at a higher level and MasterCam generates GCode.

All other machines run on Powermill.

Dont know if this is related but, i use XP on VMWare player/Workstation to use Freescale CodeWarrior IDE for the 68HC12 dev work. The thing uses an USD BDM to communicate with the dev board.

It did not work with vista and now, works great with XP running in VMWare.

Give it a shot...a lot better on running around old machines.

EDIT: Did you try this? Dont know if you can use that version or not though...

Mastercam
