My bro got a Swift VXi recently and is lookin' for a Head Unit and a speaker setup (probably 4 speakers)..

budget - 10k

genre of music - rock, metal(not very often)...

suggest some combos within 10k :)

TIA

Pioneer 2050 with aux in ( no USB)

6" coax in the door ( with spacer rings)

6x9 coax in the rear.

will exceed 10k by a little bit , if good speakers are used

JBL(GT5/GTO series) should be fine , since they are plentifully available, reasonably priced and are best suited to the rock/metal genre

Pioneer sux :P. Bloated bass and tinny highs. Buy something else. An entry level kenwood or blau or even JVC is better.

I was talking about headunits... had a chance to listen to a P800RS with infinity amps and components recently and it sounded just the same. A completely veiled midrange, tinny highs that seem to shout at you and bloated boomy bass. Thats the typical pio sound signature. Some people may like it. I surely don't :P.

@ chaos, I dont think we can fit anything else into his budget. blau/kenwood etc are hard to get in grey. JVC, possibly, and then of course , there is always Xplod :P .

Besides , with all that metal music and JBL speakers , I dont think he'll notice anyway.

@ gmano, the GT5 6" coax is 3k and the 6x9 is 4k , MRP. the HU should be about 4k. maybe he can get a deal on the whole affair

^^ oops, I didnt take the grey price into consideration.
He can get JVC HUs in grey here in chennai. Few Kenwood HU were also available in grey, need to search.

Had you ABX with another BLAU Hu or just saying it be just listeing it.

Also what medium was used.. Sir don't make assumptions just by the brand image..

I found Alpine 9887 brighter than the Pioneer P80.

btw, sorry ..forgot to mention..

bro's located in dehradun.. so, he'll probably have to get from there itself / delhi..

budget can be extended to max 12k :P

thanks for the inputs ;)

EDIT : if there's no good option .. till 12k.. MAX 15k .. :P

Have to agree with Chaos, bought a Pio 6950 for the Verna and the Mids are simply non-existant! Very coloured sound if you tweak the EQ.

For 10k it'll be hard to fit anything in, Greenhorn's suggestion is the best I can think of.

whoa. 15k gives you a lot more options :D

among others, to switch to a better HU. Either go with a pioneer 3050 , or a kenwood 5039. both should be available for <6k grey (both have USB,and the kenwoods sound a bit better in my opinion)

then speakers , you should be able to get 6" components. along with 6x9's for the rear for <10k . Component speakers need to be installed properly to sound the best BTW, but sound vastly better

JBL, Blaupunkt are some popular brands. Bull audio has been getting some good reviews as well recently.

If you're getting it installed in delhi, Try 'driven' at @ East of Kailash Main Road. I've heard nothing but good things about their installs :).

Bull is not so good as the reviews...I would suggest to stay away from it...

I havent heard it either, so cant comment. To the OP, I'd suggest you let your ears be the judge :)

I think JBL should be fine since its mostly gonna be metal/rock

And driven at mayapuri has been closed.

thanks. updated the location. Thats where it is now right ?

If you can live with 2 speakers (i.e. if the car is self-driven) or you can wait and upgrade with more speakers / amp / subwoofers in the future I would recommend:

HU in grey (say Pioneer 5050 for about 5k); and

Front component speakers (Illusion EL 6.1 for about 6.5k).

I have a pioneer 6050 and EL 6.1s and love the sound. And I may upgrade to a cheap amp and sub soon.

^^ only if you have plans for an upgrade /can sacrifice bass for clarity. I drove around with just my front components for a week or so , and yes , the detail was really good , but missed the bass a lot, which was very welcome when i finally fitted my rear 6x9's

I dont think he plans to do his ICE in stages

I have been driving around with only a head unit and front components for about 6-7 months now. I don't think the bass is inadequate. Yes, a pair of 6x9s and/or a sub will probably enhance it waaay more, but the Illusion EL 6.1s give a very decent range of sound to enjoy the music.

I personally have Pioneer DEH-2090MP in my Dad's car an it's decent.

I would suggest you Kenwood KDC-X8009U.

I am not sure about Bluapunk or JVC. Heard that too many duplicates of JVC in market.

IMHO Stay away from Sony Xplod series, they sound awful.

Tried swapping in my car's Blau MP46. Less detail and worse imaging obviously than the P800 since its a low end HU but the sound was much more balanced. Less bass as well but the bass was a lot tighter. I never said the P800 is bright. It just sounds very tinny... whether its detail or distortion, I do not know.

The content we used was Chesky Ultimate Demonstration CD written on the best available CD media at 8X. Recording quality doesn't get any better than that.

Anyway as I've said before, I'm not a car audio guy and frankly wouldn't want to get into an argument. However the fact of the matter is I don't like the Pioneer sound signature.
