Hello, I just given 12th with science faculty.. Results on 7th June.. Offcourse, I am nervous :|...

I need some help regarding my career :).. I am much much interested in Designing. Even I really wanted to do something in Designing, Animation and Gaming. But except few family members all are forcing me to go Engg. Faculty.. Even my Dad said, do whatever you want..

I really want to do something in Animation, Designing and Game Designing. Please guys give me some hints.. Am I thinking write? Should I go with Designing or Engg. is must :S ??? Any Job Opportunities in Designing section?

Totally Confused.

with the big boost in gaming industries and extensive usage of animation in all fields there are opportunities for animations related studies..... you can opt for a career in that by choosing Bachelor of Fine Arts course......

or you can choose Engg and become a software engg/design engg/hardware engg

well getting into an engineering course is like a proud owner of Aleinware from parents perspective put in gamer lingo....and its not bad actually....

Also for your designing interests you can take up a electronics / mechanical engg courses IMO.... these are just some what answers for your questions....but bare in mind that the decision lies in your hand and be careful while choosing one....dont let any other things/opinions divert you from that

If your dad says do what you want, dont bother with other people.

Dont ruin your career just because someone thinks it's lesser or more demeaning that being an engineer or a doctor.

We all have our dreams , and then there is reality. Some of us choose the former , very few unfortunately, since its a harder path.

The rest of your life will depend on the choices you make now. Mediocrity is an easy choice , but you may regret it.

On the other hand , what you want to become is not a choice, but a destination. If you're game for the bumpy ride, all the best :cool2:

I'm unfortunately, stuck with reality. I dont mind , since it pays the bills, and I'm prepared to live with the illusions of what I could have been.

Your parents want you to get into a predictable and secure career path. [strike]That is understandable. especially if your parents income will be drying up/ending soon. If your folks can afford - i mean if they are going to be financially stable for the long term ( ie very rich :P ) , ask them to. On the other hand , If you will be becoming the bread winner of the family in a 5~10 years , then Its a small sacrifice for your family, getting stuck in a boring job, just for the pay.

But hey, you can browse TE and give out advice :P

I know reality sucks , but someone has to give the bad news[/strike]

EDIT : if you can afford to buy a super bike then definitely you can afford to take a few risky choices. All the best :hap2:

That was very profound.. and slightly depressing. But i agree with you on this.

Rahul- all the best with the choices ahead of you. Have you considered Architecture? Seems like a pretty creative field and pays well too :)

Its not near game design or the other stuff you mentioned, but is still worth considering.

Here is my bit

Engineering (CSE or IT) is the safest option, after that a whole world of opportunities open. There is hardly any field of computers that you cannot enter be it game programming, designing, animation etc.

Suppose you take a designing course and 5 years later want to change jobs for some reason (got bored, financial security, higher role etc), it may be difficult. That would be very easy if you had an engineering degree.

Right now all you know is that you want to get into game designing and animation. Do you know that you will actually like it? Identify your core competency i.e. find out the areas you are really good at. And then work upon those.

If you think you are really good at animation then only go for it. Remember that you will always face competition no matter what the field and you have to do better than average to land with a good job.

Whatever you do make sure its a graduate course. If you are unsure about your areas of expertise then my suggestion is to take the safest way out i.e. engineering. You can do animation parallel to that, I have a few friends who did Maya during the summer break of their engineering. If you feel that you are really good at animation then go for it.

I agree with hammerhead. You could do a course in parellel for animation etc. I've seen many guys do very good work in 3D tools without attending any institute. You can always follow your passion. Engineering(CS) opens lot more paths for you and ofcourse game programming is open too.

If you're very good at designing (sketching etc) you may wanna join institute like NID. It will get you a job as an artist in any game design company....not mention lot more opportunities.

I am doing a major change in my career too. Moving away from usual work at my company and gonna work with few friends on a game design studio. So its upto you, Its not much of a big deal if you want to follow your passion after doing engg.

^^ I tend to agree with hammerhead here.

Basically you can move to animation after you complete your engineering (there are lots of courses out there and most of them may not require you to have done something major in fine arts, etc.). But you cannot do an engineering course after spending 3-4 yrs in fine arts (or at least it will be very difficult).

Do engineering as it opens up a lot of options for you (maybe parallely you can also do some course in animation/graphics, etc.) You will find out whether you are really good at it. With all due respect, animation/graphic involves creativity and people are just born it with. Very rarely can it be taught. Someone may know Maya inside out but can hardly create anything out of it as against a born artist who can sketch brilliant animated characters. The latter would end up being paid more in any animation company

totally agree with Hammerhead,Arya and Kneo.

and quoting what my dad always says to me ,

" Do engineering because it's not just about technical knowledge but also it teaches you many aspects of life and all. and once you do your engineering you are like on the safer side and have a backup so when take on a journey to follow your dreams and god forbid something goes wrong you always have that degree with you which will help you out. "

so even i have almost made up my mind to do engineering ..it's only the maths.. (Calculus,Trigo part) that is scaring me a bit.

and one more thing..whatever you decide to do should be your own decision

just dont do it because someone is telling you to.. if you take up engineering ..take it seriously cause from what ive heard it's not very easy .:)

study for knowledge and not marks..

something i always try to follow ..but then not being able to mug up and get a few topics into my head has made me kind of a average student from quiet a good student.. :(

Just the piece that I wished to write, anyway nicely put.

Well I am a engineer and loved every moment of my college life.... but here is a piece of advice....

Do something which you really love not for the sake of it.....we all have big plans and little becomes reality....

We change our career path all the time....
1) engg in some core branch
2) join a software firm and forget even engg basics
3) do MBA in finance
4) join a banking company

so all my life i will keep changing my stream.....

I would have loved to become a Pilot (best career in my opinion)

on a diff note.....Thr are undergraduate courses in actual game designing in US universities..... so i say ...clear SAT and set urself for ur goal...otherwise you will become like most Indian engineers like me....

Engg is a safe option.

Do you want to take up desiging n animation coz u really love doing it or coz u think its an easy way out...

Do you have aptitude for art? Do you have passion to learn Fine Arts?

Can you invest in Game/Animation education abroad...?

And one of the well-paid jobs as well... :D

As said above, doing something just for the sake of it isnt quite the way to go. An aptitude for the subject shall give you an upper hand yes, but its also a matter of interest. It is your interest which shall motivate you. If you are motivated enough, you can most of the times do pretty damn well. Again, as mentioned above, engineering is like a backup yes, but there are many other options. However, it all depends on what you wish to be in the future. Since your dad is cool about you picking up whatever you wish to, there are quite a few aspects you have to look into. To go into animation and designing sounds easy, but you see, you are in the end an artist. You have to be really good in the stuff you design. Else, there is no market for your work. If theres no market for your work, its practically useless.

Again, doing engineering just because the masses go for it isnt quite the way to go either. If you are pursuing engineering, ensure its from a decent college. In my opinion, its no use doing something from a college which isnt very well known, coz the faculty will not be good, the provisions shall be equally bad and the opportunities, well they may come, but not as good as they can be elsewhere.

Although flying is in demand and maybe termed as a well respected job, I think the recent interest in it is similar to what the trends suggest. First it was engineering, everyone was flocking for it, then IT and comps, later MBA. Now theres a surplus of each type :P Same is gonna happen with pilots. What sort of future do you see with flying, as long as the same aviation fuel is used? Already the rising fuel prices have gotten the better of many, how long is flying going to remain affordable? Unless a new fuel resource comes in, its not quite practical that the pilots are going to have much job in hand esp with respect to maybe 2-3 yrs down the line? And by going for pilot training right after +2, you are actually not doing anything. You have no qualifications apart from +2. After maybe 5 yrs from now, do you have a good degree which you can show elsewhere? Not really :P

Anyway, those were my opinions, no offence to anyone. And let my post not hijack it into a discussion about aviation. Lets stick to the point.
