Hello all,
since I am going South Korea for business trip soon...
I will be carrying my office laptop with me, so here is my question. if i purchase my personal laptop from there want to bring with me. will the cutomo officer allow me to bring two laptops ,office n personal ones,
do they charge extra money??
i am confused

Check with rules. but i think u shud be ok.

I know of ppl who brought 2 in the same lappy bag cos no one looked :P

On a serious note, i believe you can carry one with you on board and put in a second in ur checked in luggage. Esp if you are taking one out with you, you can get the same marked with customs while leaving. so when u come back, they kno ur returning with the old one and bringing in ONLY 1 new one :)

Nope..not allowed. You are only allowed to bring one laptop when you come to India. This was personally confirmed by me from a customs guy when I was leaving for Germany and was already carrying a laptop.

Get an letter from your employer stating that you are taking the laptop for official purpose and declare it at the customs while leaving. In that case, you will be able ot bring the 2nd laptop as your personal one without any issues.

On that note, South Korea is certainly not the best place to buy a laptop. US/english laptops are rare and sell at a premium.

as far as i have seen - customs make more trouble when you are returning from europe/US - they are slightly more lenient when you come from the east, again it depends on where you land - Mumbai customs much more strict than kolkata customs (who did not stop my colleague who returned from thailand with - 1 work laptop , 2 personal laptops, a S3, a D40 and a bunch of USB drives :P )

Anyway - if customs do catch you - the non-bribe amount is $50 per additional laptop

I dont know who told you that, but the rule as far as I know is that you can bring in one laptop free of customs duty regardless of how many you are already have when you left for the country provided you can prove that the other laptops are not freshly bought on the trip.

In fact my roommate had 3 laptops when he returned back from a US trip. He has taken an office laptop with him when he left India. In the US office he got a more powerful laptop from the office there to get his work done and apart from that he bought a Mac Book for a colleague and he bought the three back without any issues with the customs. Ofcourse he had a printed delcarations from the office stating that the laptops were give given to him by the company for his work.
