Castle Crashers coming to PC through Steam

Four years ago, a few people over at Newgrounds teamed up to bring the beat ‘em up genre back into relevance with a game called Castle Crashers. At the time, the game was only available on the Xbox 360 through its online portal Xbox Live Arcade. The game was a tremendous success, both critically and financially. Much time has passed since then and the game developer, The Behemoth, has finally listened to the fans and announced that it will be bringing the game to the PC through Valve’s digital distribution service, Steam.

In a forum post, the developers explain, “We were invited by Valve to show Castle Crashers running on Steam at Gamescom. This is our first time at the event, and we’re sending our very own John Baez to the show all by himself!” While the original announcement was made on The Behemoth’s developer blog here, a high amount of traffic seems to have brought the blog down. While the site goes back up, more information on the PC port of Castle Crashers can be found in a forum post.

Here are some of the features of the Steam version of Castle Crashers according to the developers:

Integrated voice chat
Steam Achievements
Gamepad support
Steam Cloud Support
Local and Online Multiplayer
Colourful hand drawn 2D visuals!
Over 30 levels plus five arena modes
More than 25 characters and over 40 weapons!
Intuitive combo and magic system: Unlock an arsenal of new attacks as your character progresses through the game.
Experience system: Level up your character and adjust Strength, Magic, Defense and Agility.
Animal orbs: These adorable little companions each add different abilities to aid you on your journey
Arena mode: Battle other players in free-for-all or team matches with four unique modes to choose from!
Insane Mode: Test your skills in the ultimate campaign challenge.

Right from the time you begin this game, you know it's gonna be a fun ride. Castle Crashers is completely done in 2D with hand-drawn sprites, which gives it that old-school feel. It gives you an option to start the game using four-player multiplayer right from the beginning, which is an early indication that you're not really meant to play this game alone.

The gameplay is completely action-based, dividing your moves into fast attack, strong attack, jump, using items and magic. There's no puzzle solving here to slow down the pace. As long as you're in the level, you're fighting.

The Behemoth has also listed the hardware requirements for the PC version of the game:

OS: Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8
Processor: Dual Core Processor 2GHz+
Memory: 1GB
Hard Disk Space: 300MB
Video Card: Graphics: 256MB dedicated directx 9.0c compatible card
Sound: DirectX 9.0 compatible sound card

The Behemoth has not announced a release date for the game as of yet, but there might be more information coming up during Gamescom or PAX later this year.

For those who are not aware, this is darn good old school co-op beat-em-up/hack-en-slash title. Don't let those cute characters fool you, each of them pack a secret power. I had a blast with this title on the 360 with my brother. You guys should definitely try it, once it's on the PC. ;)

Console review

Release date isn't finalised but that's alright, I'll inform my roommate to dust his controller and keep it ready when it is due. It's been a while since we played a good co-op title. I think the last one we enjoyed thoroughly was Renegade Ops.

Thanks for the headsup Allwyn! :P

This was the second title I had played after the amazing Scott Pilgrim V/S The World. XBLA titles always kick-ass for co-op. These small titles pack a huge punch. If Ubisoft could port Scott Pilgrim with online play via steam, then the PC owners are in for a treat. Nevertheless, I'm sure you'll have a dam good time with Castle Crashers.

Sorry but dosent looks interesting. But i do like games like limbo.Thats another reason for not trying ratchet and clank.:D

Sweet! Thanks for the headsup man. So I've got this and Trine 2's DLC for co-op'ing with my roomie. Suhweet! :D

Allwyn how lengthy is the game?

I am trying to pick one out of this, Trine 2's DLC, Black Mesa until Dishonored turns up on this 9th. :P

Not long Gannu. If you're co-op'ing then it should last more than 6 hours. It's not that difficult either.

Ah ok. Asking because the wiki link mentioned RPG elements. Lets see.

It does have RPG elements, but not in a dense manner. It's mild and easy to handle. This is a lukewarm title with fun characters and old school gameplay. Check out the intro OST. It's epic!

Forgot to update! Started the title day before yesterday before we started with Dexter and Homeland E2. We knew we wouldn’t be able to play the game after we’re done with the episodes! :P

The game packs so much fun and awesomeness! Ol’ school beat ‘em up titles are never boring and this reminded me of the Double Dragon days. I chose the Blue Knight (frost shards special attack) and my roomie opted for the Purple Knight (frog tongue shoot special attack). Completed several chapters, upgraded the abilities, beaten many bosses, unlocked some new weapons and we paused it. Before starting any mission, we stock up on the health bottles (5 seems to the max. limit) in case we end up getting owned. Loved the enemy variety – there are so many types of minions and different bosses and each boss battle seems to have a strategy to beat the guy. Hell even the soundtracks of the game are awesome.

Looks like a solid game to us. Will continue the game today. :)

PS: Thanks for reminding about the game Allwyn.

Done and dusted! Had a blast with the title. :ohyeah:

The final boss battle was the best part! Well I don't want to spoil it for others but those who've played it know what is in store. All in all a wonderful title and a time killer esp. when played in co-op. Must not have taken the two of us more than 6 hours as Allwyn had put it before.

Just noticed that my left thumb has turned black thanks to the shade of the analog stick. :P
