CCTV Cameras for Home

I want to install CCTV cameras at home and as per my calculations I need 7 cameras.

- 2 Cameras for front (Main road around 30~35mt wide)
- 1 camera for back entrance (road around 10mt wide with houses on other side)
- 1 camera for upstairs
- 3 cameras for covering kitchen and walking area (don't want to include rooms anyways)

So what are my options, I have no idea how to start and what to look. Called a guy and he will get back to me with a quote by tomorrow. He suggested 2*5mp cameras for front door and remaining 2mp cameras along with 5mp DVR for recording.

I have seen and used hikvision NVR and Cameras so I'll be commenting on that.

You need a 8 channel NVR which has PoE capability inbuilt, this allows you to connect the cameras directly to NVR and the NVR will also provide power to them over ethernet.

You need 7 IP cameras which have PoE capability.

You will have to buy a 6TB HDD separately which is meant for surveillance always on type stuff, like WD Purple.

I'm gonna recommend you these from the hikvision value series (you can go higher if you want). Mostly these will get the job done.

There are NVR and Cameras available without the PoE capability in those you would have to supply power to each Camera separately which becomes a hassle. If you buy cameras with PoE and a NVR without the PoE even then you would have to buy a PoE switch separately which powers all your cameras and receives data over same ethernet cables and forwards the data to NVR with single ethernet cable. So it's best to buy NVR and Cameras with PoE so only 1 wire goes to each camera from the NVR.

Many cameras are available in the market but you must buy IP Camera, this is all digital stuff none of that analog rubbish, setup and forget for 10 to 15 years type of stuff.

Thanks for the insight but this is quite expensive, I was watching a video on youtube and wasn't impressed by the difference in quality VS the price for 2mp cameras (Link -

) but the footage of 4mp IP cameras looks great (Link -

) and looks like a perfect fit for front door cameras. for the indoors once I can live with 2mp cameras.

Analog HD cameras might not give you the same result after years of operation, the output quality of camera might be good but it's depended upon the connection because of it's analog nature, where as IP Camera just sends digital 1's and 0's over the wires, the cable might be 100ft long or 10ft long doesn't matter to the 1's and 0's signal remains the same, but analog just has too many variables.

I can understand it might seem expensive specially the cameras, but one has to think they are weather proof, fog proof, and are meant for 24/7 operation for 10-15 years, be it extremely hot sunny days or heavy rains, dust storms and whatnot, the abuse that these things take, this price is nothing.

I'll get a quote for IP cameras as well, with a mix of entry level IP cameras for indoor and 2 expensive ones for outdoor (front gate). Thankfully my area is quite safe but want to be vigilant as trouble never knocks the door before hitting you.

Now I don't know how many days of recording this will store, to give you an idea, I have three 8MP IP Cameras installed at home, IP Cams do take slightly more storage compared to analog cameras, with 2 TB HDD I can only store max 14 days of footage before it overwrites, you have 7 cameras and 1 TB HDD no idea how many days it will store. If you want to look back only 1 or 2 days than low storage is fine, but if you want to track something over period of days, you definitely need more storage, like when you sit down to look back at footage, you get more days. You will also get the option of reducing the camera quality in settings so it takes less storage and gives you more days.

I'd also like to let you know that make sure your cameras and NVR are connected to your home inverter. There is no point of surveillance if it goes off when the power goes out. Also make sure to connect your NVR and Cameras to pure sine wave inverter as this insures it gets clean power and increases it's longevity.

I need backup of 3~4 days max but will install higher capacity if needed also made a note to power the setup with an inverter. I gifted a camera to my relative as some strange things were going on in front of her house, to everyone surprise everything became normal after that but now I am told that she switch off the camera because that socket is used for other things (just imagine you have 3k camera and don't want to install 50rs box for regular power)
