I have 2 IDE HDD on my primary cable and a CDRW on my secondary. This setup has worked for me for more than a year now. I then connected another HDD on my secondary cable as a slave and found that its non-functional (NOTE: I have not removed it yet). But after I did that I found that suddenly my CDRW started behaving strange.

At times it does not detect when the OS starts off, although during boot up it detects the CD connected on the secondary master. In WinXP when i do a 'Scan HArdware Devices', at times it detects the CD drive and shows up in my Windows Explorer. After around 10-15 mins (or just 5 mins when I am copying) it suddenly disappears again ! In the event logs, it tells me that there was some warning in the paging operation and that the drive was removed without being stopped (something to that gist).

If I do a hardware scan again 2-3 times, it may detect the drive again !

Any idea why this is happening or how to solve it ? Any help would be much appreciated

let me get this: u connected the second hdd as slave along with cdrw as slave on a single cable - i.e. the secondary cable?

its bound to give trouble - u should have made either one of them as master

try this - attach the secondary hdd with cable select option as well as cdrw with cable select option and see if both are detected.

Fixed...

The problem is with the second HDD that i connected. The moment i disconnected it, things were back to normal.
