If only we knew who was to be untrusted and who was not to be, there wouldn't have been any problem. And if you're saying that it could be figured out by the persons feedback, then what about the odd one-two person who got duped? Yes, there are risks involved, but isn't it better to take steps to minimize that risk?

Agreed, steps need to be taken - but at what level? I think steps like these will even drive away newbies who want to get into this stuff - simply because they'll think it's too much investment.

The one or two people getting duped (if it happened even after the sellers had good feedback), will continue to happen even after these kind of steps are enforced, you have to realize that.

Another things that I had previously written was that this is not just a place where members are there just to buy/sell/make money etc [Atleast till now, it isn't]. It is a discussion portal, with a addon feature for members who have come for that purpose specifically.

Yes, i didnt reply to this bit, for i was confused. So let me ask - is this surely the way this place works, or is it the impression that you personally have of this place? I ask because:

1. I enter as a new user to the forum, there's nothing mentioned that indicates the message you are giving me. The trading zone seems to be as much a part of the forum as anything else

2. I see that a good bunch of activity (~10-15% [a vague estimate based on the thread/post count]) happens in the trading zone section. This is equal to, if not more than any other individual section of the forum.

Now i'm just saying that this trading section is giving great features to people, so much so that people are becoming members for using just that part. I did so, after being a silent observer for a couple of weeks. This is just what i personally think, i could be wrong.

we want more active members, and by that, we mean people who actually contribute something meaningful - there are tons of noobs out there asking questions , who could benefit from something you know. We lose nothing by discouraging lurkers :P

Update as of last night:

[1] New members will now have 5 moderated posts. After which they will get auto access to market section. We can revoke access when needed.

[2] New members should be able to make a post in market section. However they cannot start a thread until they cross the 5 moderated posts.

Premium has been renamed to Privileged. Bold highlighting has been removed as it did not server any purpose.

Sounds like amazing news, though I'm a bit confused about 1 & 2.

(2) says new members can only post but they cannot start a thread until they cross 5 moderated posts. However, as per (1), they're anyway only getting access to that section after those 5 moderated post.

The way I understand it - after 5 moderated posts, new members get access to both posting and creating new threads in the market?

Anyway, many thanks for the new moves.

A 0 post member can post replies and hence buy. A 5 post member can start a thread and hence sell.

In future we can take longer strides if needed. Lets just take things one step at a time.

Sorry i messed up the number in my previous post, corrected now.

Again, there's the confusion - A 0 post member does not have access to the market section, as per (1), so how can he post replies at all?

Anyway, i think on the whole, it's a great move :-)

isn't that too less...it should be atleast 25 post before anyone can sell anything!

And who is going to moderate those posts? In fact the bigger question is, what will we achieve out of this exercise if it is 25. We are anyway filtering members at the registration stage. In fact we reject more than 50% registration requests everyday (those IDs get deleted).

BTW - We might restrict post access as well for 5 posts since there are some implementation issues.

Aah, being able to see the market place again is a welcome change. Specially for members like who are bit silent but still active members(mostly reading the relevant posts).
Thanks,

My cousin who is a new member and with almost no post has access to market section. He never made transactions in market section earlier as well. Are there any changes in rules related to that?

Will the helpfulness points be implemented for the Buying Help section? Its been 4 weeks now. Even the helpfulness points displayed in the user profile has now disappeared.
At least the reps could be enabled for the section temporarily if admins are still working on it. Even the show off section has reps enabled while there is no way to acknowledge helpful posts in the Buying Help section.

Edit: Reps have been enable now :D Implemented less than 24 hrs after being requested for. :hap2: Great to see Admins considering valid member requests :)

Reps shoudn't be enabled in PC Buying Advice section and Show Off section . Why is there no way to acknowledge helpful posts in the Buying Help section ?

There is no justification of enabling reps in Show Off section .

Helpfulness Points should be re-enabled again specifically in PC Buying Advice

Because , it doesn't always necessarily imply that a person with high reps always suggests the best and a person with low reps always suggests wrong . But sometimes people with higher reps takes their reps advantage and dominates over others despite himself being wrong .

I feel Helpfulness points on the other hand is a good measuring stick which is compleltely unbiased and good method for helping people . Rather than repeating posts with same content , people can just vote the best helpful post , the Helpfulness Points thereby clarifying it to others who will see the thread later can easily make out what to choose

Moreover adding reps to a person's post on PC Buying Advice doesn't help at all , because people cannot make out whether that post is really helpful or not

To save excessive usage of same and repeatative posts , it will be better to re-enable Helpfulness points in PC Buying Advice
