I don't know how websites and forums work, but is it possible to think about implemeting a chat room within the site? Is it doable via a plugin of some kind? I understand this is one of those older tech forums that may not have this functionality, but it'll be awesome if we could have such a feature!

Actually TE runs on Xenforo, which is modern and under active development. I think it used to run on PHPbb earlier, but that has not been the case for quite a while. Quite a few active forums run on Xenforo.

So if Xenforo supports chatrooms, it can be added, in theory. Whether the maintainers have bandwidth is another issue altogether. Chatrooms also need more active moderation. So in guessing not.

Chat is the antithesis of forum. It'll kill the forum format.

Look how telegram is slowly replacing XDA.

I thought they had something like this already. For quick questions.

Agreed. It makes for low-quality content conversations.

It takes time to think through things without the time pressure chat imposes. I switched off this chat thing over a decade ago.

Personally, I prefer the forum format a lot more than chat or Reddit. On chat, different people keep talking about different things and there's no real conversation ever. On Reddit, there's scope for real conversation, but the deeply nested threading makes people go on random tangents and it gets difficult to find threads with good content. Forum is the best for proper discussions. It's unfortunate that the popularity of this format has gone down. 10 years ago these were so much more active.

I've had better conversations on boards with say 20 active members than on ones with hundreds. It can get tiring when you leave a topic and discover it went ahead 10 pages the next day. And the day after and so on. I find myself blocking loads of people just to comprehend a topic

Now i remember some time ago there was a whatsapp group @agentmilo

Don't know if it's still active

I agree with all the points made here, and I too prefer the forum format for focused conversations. One needs to make an effort to respond so more often than not, responses and inputs and thought out.

Just that some part of me felt that a small popup chat window might be an interesting addition to have. And you guys are right, we already have a lot of other avenues for that.

And @blr_p , yes, I'm already a part of that whatasapp group, thanks!
