One of my friend needs to call his girl at UAE, so need a good cheap option for some 1~2 hrs uninterrupted talks :)
please sugegst some good internet telephony service, and procedure for getting started.
Is skype cheap enough ? He needs to make calls to mobiles/phone at UAE.
and guys... its urgent.. :ohyeah:

Best option is to install Skype on mobile, and use it on WiFi wherever applicable and as back up have a good data plan from the mobile service provider. That would be very cheap to the extent of being free - WiFi can be free external ones or even your office or home network.

I have used the following to make calls from laptop/mobile in UK to India:

1) Glocaltalk: both laptop/mobile International Calling - Call Abroad

2) Actionvoip: both laptop/mobile Actionvoip | For the cheapest international calls

3) Smartvoip: both laptop/mobile SmartVoip | The smart way to save on your calls!

4) lycatalk: only mobile Welcome to LYCATALK

5) Localphone: friends use so not sure Cheap International Calls with Localphone

Found most of them using google search. They are good for calling to India. Check if their rates for UAE are good too on their respective websites.

Otherwise google it out :)

EDIT: I agree to the fact that skype is very costly

Skype to Skype is still free right? If two people can use their internet connections or cheap data plans on the mobile, then it is a really good deal.

However, I agree buying a mobile plan for Skype is not that economical.

He wants to call from India to UAE. Can he purchase skype credits unsing standard HDFC/ICICI/SBI accounts ? or will he need paypal ? Paypals gonna be a mess for him.

^^ skype is way too costly.. try the ones mentioned by motorheadinc.. it will be cheaper.. and if ur friend still wants to use skype.. his call.. :)

and yes.. u can buy the credits using the local bank creditcards.. don't have an idea regd. the debit cards though..

@ Kauzy: dont you have to pay currency transaction fees when buying in Euro. So you end up paying more than 1p a minute. Atleast thats what happened when i used actionvoip.

Glocaltalk and lycatalk work out to be exactly one pence a minute :P.

well.. i dunno.. never looked closely.. :P

and i always tend to forget numbers when using the calling card service.. so i prefer using the calls through laptop.. :P

@ Ronnie: Both the cells were using GPRS right or is it fring to normal mobile number?

Used Fring some time back and as far as I remember Skype has pulled back support to fring so u cant use the same to log into skype.

Sorry for thread Hijacking :P

Whats the cheapest for India-Muscat? Gtalk voice chat not working :( AFAIK no such issues with other gulf countries.

Try Spokn...

www.spokn.com best for calling with many features, even better than skype...can be used on desktop (windows & mac), sip enabled phones, windows mobile, Blackberry, iPhone & even from a landline...check the charges u will get the clear picture...

Both cell phones need to have fring installed and after logging in you can make a call thru fring network...
