Cheap domain name and VPS sellers for Pangolin?

I've got a small Rpi4 server setup, which runs Jellyfin, Paperless and Wallabag. I plan to add Audiobookshelf and maybe one or two more small things to tinker around with. My current setup with tailscale for remote access isn't convenient for my less tech savvy folks who wanna access it. I plan to have Pangolin installed, since I'm not too sure about port forwarding and the like, even though nginx is supposed to be the way to go.

I purchased a domain name three days ago on the cheap for a year (around 3-4 dollars, with renewal around the same price), from OVH Canada. But I got a mail last night saying that my order was cancelled for 'insufficient personal info'.

Any suggestions for domain registration for these purposes which have a more hassle free experience? I'm also planning to test out a VPS from Hapih Host for Pangolin for a month before committing to a longer plan, but am open to cheaper/better alternatives.

I have a .dev from Spaceship and it has been a painless experience.
You can try them out.

You can also compare domain prices on https://tld-list.com/

As for a VPS, Oracle Cloud has a generous free tier. When I signed up (around 2020), they didn't require any payment methods to be attached, so there's no chance of ever going beyond the free-tier resources for me.

Not sure what the sign up process looks like today. But you can give it a shot.

I got a cheap deal and it got processsed immediately, so thanks!

I'm streaming from Jellyfin from the server, which might be a little dicey and go against Oracle T&Cs.

You're welcome!

And yeah that could get problematic.
I personally host my media on-prem for this very reason.

Did you find a suitable VPS for your streaming use case? I noticed a lot of the budget offerings tend to be EU/US based, so always assumed latency would be an issue.
I made the mistake of cheaping out on the lowest plan for a site called webdedis- 350 bucks for a month (lower if you take a longer plan).

I'm not too keen on port forwarding, so I'm trying out solutions which don't require that. Pangolin looked beautiful, but their custom wireguard thingy 'newt' doesn't connect with my vps. So I used tailscale instead to connect it, but the connection speed is terrible, some 5mbits.

I'm trying out different solutions to this to figure out whether its an issue on my end (I'm running on a 50mbps plan), the vps or the manner in which I'm connecting it all together. Wireguard+nginx seems to be the most popular alternative, so gonna try that. Wasted the entire day trying to figure this out.

Apologies for the rant. Do let me know if you find a decent vps.

I'm undecided on the media server on the cloud route. My current setup is a basic Digital Ocean VPS running Vaultwarden and Nginx Proxy Manager as reverse proxy. I have Wireguard setup on it with wg-easy. It connects fine, but I'm unable to properly access the interfaces for my services. Planning to try tailscale next.

I guess most people run media servers locally to avoid all this trouble. I currently use Stremio with Real Debrid and am quite happy with it, except for not being able to share with others. But seeing how complex it is to set up the arr stack and run a local media server, not sure if it's worth the trouble.

I have been using Racknerd for 2 years. This is for vpn and streaming.

Oracle for more. This is for everything else.

I manage all via cloudflare and traefik(pangolin is this basically with more integrations)

Digital ocean is too expensive. You can also look for Azure and AWS reserves computes but you'll have to pay for Ip address as well.

I will go azure and aws route someday as racknerd is EU and oracle is US which creates a lot of latency for me. I can’t shift to oracle india as they ban very frequently for no apparent reason on free tier.

bigrock has good deals for .IN domain if you buy for 3 years.
