Although nothing new about this post, thought I'll nevertheless share it considering the degree of popularity Torrents enjoy amongst most users on this forum

We picked a WD My book World edition ext HDD (500 GB ) for 6.5K as a shared gift for a co-worker
Then used this guide: Hacking WD MyBook World Ed: Transmission

and voila, you have a sub 20W power consumption torrent downloader machine with 1/2 a TB of storage for an amazingly small amount of money
And if you are running short of space, you can plug in a TB ext HDD via the USB port

of course, building a full fledged server like my NASSeedbox - http://www.techenclave.com/guides-and-tutorials/how-build-low-cost-linux-home-102018.html is always an option but this one costs far less, and is far easier to setup and get running

Congrats and how about making a small tutorial for the same...

It would be nice to have our very own geek making a step by step tut for the same. If its not too much...
 
oh oh would there be sumthing like this that would work on my Maxtor 300GB external HDD?
 
Well .. maybe.. but it seems the "transmission" software runs ON the drive itself without needing a PC. Maybe it has some kind of a firmware linux??

This seems damn useful. It could even be used for direct downloads if there is a linux download manager with a web-interface.
 
on the other hand , it wont run p2p guardian would it ? or any other similar program...? thats where a download rig would come in....
 
Actually I'd have made a tut but for the fact that the tut o the link is pretty comprehensive and covers a lot of ground beyond just transmission

And factoring the price of the HDD, the casing (mini PC) costs just 3.5K which is awesome value for money

Post back/PM if you run into any issues, though I doubt any of you guys would face hiccups

its not for windows i think. most of those looks like linux commands.

Nopes, thing is Vanilla (Non NAS) ext HDDs have a basic protocol translation layer that simply acts as a conduit between a USB/Firewire interface and the HDDs SATA/IDE interface (a typical dumb device)

On the other hand, NAS drives chipsets typically require using a complete network translation and thus require a a full blown computing platform (like the way your router does)

Well .. maybe.. but it seems the "transmission" software runs ON the drive itself without needing a PC. Maybe it has some kind of a firmware linux??

Exactly, it ha s a barebone linux install running on it... once configured, it's like another PC on your network albeit an extremely cheap and ultra low power system

@superczar : after reading a few comments/reviews at newegg, almost everyone seems to be b**ching about heating problems (one fellow saying it died after 6months) and low transfer speeds (~50MBps).

Do post ur experience so we know if its really worth it.

I thought about picking up a NAS for similar purposes, but ultimately, get one ONLY if space is really at a premium. Else, a headless low power Atom system will only cost little bit more but more future expandability + much more flexibility options :)
