Hi. I'm wanting to learn graphic design [photoshop, flash, illustrator etc] & am undecided whether I should build a desktop or go in for a laptop. So I'm wanting to know which are the laptops which can get the job done at a relatively low price point i.e. ~20k-30k.

I'll probably have to keep all the programs mentioned above open simultaneously, so multi-tasking is a pre-requisite. I'll also want at least a 14 inch screen, preferably bigger. Gaming is not a requirement. Besides graphic design, the machine will be used only for web browsing, office applications etc.

Please advise. Thank you.

Do you need to move around the computer especially for graphic work?

If you end up using the laptop at home, especially for this work, you rather take a desktop.

There is a Zenith Director plus at 33k. I am not sure of the quality of ASS though.

Unless you plan on working on 3D animation, basic graphics apps like photoshop, illustrator depend more on the CPU and RAM rather than the GPU.

I think Dell Inspiron 1545s (w/3GB RAM) are available for a little more than 30K while the Acer 5738z is available for around 28K. You might want to check up the exact price with dealers in your area.

Edit: If you dont plan on moving around with the laptop, a desktop will definitely offer more bang for the buck. You could build a very good config for roughly 30K that will beat any comparable laptop in processing power.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I would prefer the mobility a laptop has to offer, & so was wanting to know if a cheap laptop would suffice for my needs. In fact, I also have space constraints & that is another factor which has got me considering a laptop, more than the portability.

I do realize that there's no comparison between a desktop & a laptop at the same price point. But I was hoping I could get away with a cheap laptop by adding a bit more to my budget for the desktop. Hence, my preferred price range of ~20k-30k.

So, based on your suggestions, the Acer 5738z seems to be the cheapest solution, so far, which will get the job done.

Any other suggestions? The cheaper the better.

PS- Though mobility is something I've mentioned, I don't mind a heavy laptop. [Am prepared to bear the burden if I can save some moolah!]

If you dont plan on using 3D Studio Max or Maya or similar 3D animation programs, the Acer 5738z will suffice.

If you want to save money, buying a desktop will be the best option as you can build a very capable rig for less than 25k.

If you want to save money but will buy a laptop, you can check out the Zenith products or Acer 4736z.
But if you buy Acer 4736z, you will have to sacrifice screen space(14 inch) and battery life(the 5738z has better battery life) than if you buy the 5738z.
The price difference among these two is less than 1k.
