HI,
I am looking for the cheapest solution to call Germany.
Airtel Land line charges Rs10 a minute and it is similar with idea cellular.
I am gonna get a vodafone connection as it seems to have the cheapest rates with their so called "World Calling Cards" at about Rs 4/- a minute. Any one know anything better?

How is Skype? I have never used it, but I don't mind doing that if it is way cheaper.
I have skype on my TV and dont mind downloading it for the PC as well, but thats not really a such an elegant solution for me, unless I can have Skype on my mobile phone. If thats possible with which phones can use this feature? Would a blackberry or iphone do? Can I call a mobile thru skype..? I dont know I am really a noob with Skype.

Thanks a lot for all the help you guys can give me.
Cheers,

...whichever works out cheaper....

I intend to call both actually, but when possible will call the land line as they are almost always cheaper and clearer,

Yesterday the landline-landline call was super clear compared to the mobile-mobile...I dont know why but it surly was...

...getting the vodafone PostPaid with World Calling Card.....Anyone has better options?

Fixed Line 0.04/sec = 2.4 Rs a minute

Mobile 0.13/sec = 7.8 Rs a minute

This is with the Rs 550/- World Calling Card....

I can suggest you to use actionvoip ""Actionvoip offers very cheap calls to Germany landlines for INR 0.414""

Mobiles are 10 times as costly on action voip but still cheaper ""Actionvoip offers very cheap calls to Germany mobiles for INR 3.846""

Actionvoip | cheapest calling rates

Both options workout to be much cheaper than your vodafone connection. Their service is good but IIRC they will charge you in euroes and your bank will levy some foreign currency transaction fees (max 5-10%)

but even then it works out to be cheaper. Only downside is that you will have to call using a PC/Laptop

or you can try smartvoip to call Landlines for free :devil2:

as per their website SmartVoip | Our cheap rates

Edit: You may need to buy some credit before you are able to make free calls. But you can definitely try before buying credit :)

Glad to help.

@Agantuk: Dint realise that. Changed it now. :P Lolzzzz

@Infected: Mate did you try Smartvoip. I am not able to register...

Thank for the info, but I haven't tried either.

Just not to keen on using a PC or Laptop for making those calls...:-(

Though "Fixed Line 0.04/sec = 2.4 Rs a minute"

Seems like a good deal to me if it works out. . . .

Try Spokn...

www.spokn.com best for calling with many features, even better than skype...can be used on desktop (windows & mac), sip enabled phones, windows mobile, Blackberry, iPhone & even from a landline...check the charges u will get the clear picture...

errr... I thought you were fine with using PC/laptop and what can be cheaper than FREE !!! .VOIP services can be used from Mobile as well. For that you will need to do some SIP settings. You will need a good mobile internet connection.

EDGE gets laggy when using skype and other VOIP applications but you can try that. Or you can get a BSNL 3G sim and a 3G handset. Install Fring and configure the SIP to use Smartvoip/ActionVoip and the likes.

Alternatively the apps for mobile phones are here SmartVoip Mobile Voip | Cheap calls anywhere you go!

Man Atleast explore the website if the default option doesnt suit you... :)

^^ Ya I was looking thru the website for options, but did not register.

For ActionVOIP:

Germany (Landline) 0.007 0.008

Germany (Mobile) 0.065 0.075

This is in Euros so in Rs about:

Germany (Landline) 0.48rs/m

Germany (Mobile) 3.9rs/m

But then I need to get a headset. Though I agree they are really low compared to Vodafone..

and worth a try...

How is the quality of the connection?

Going thru smartVOIP right now...this seems better if I can get it to work on my mobile nothing like it....

The best part you already highlighted is "Germany (Landline) FREE* FREE*"

yes it does not get better than this....

But i really cant test it right now,. as I am in office and cant download it here....

Used action voip (for calling to India :) ) and their call quality was really good, second only to Lycatalk. Though sometimes it does get bad but that happens in even mobiles. A decent 3G phone + 3G mobile broadband would suffice for your calling needs. I hope they do a full roll out of 3G in India soon. I use laptop + (skype, glocaltalk) and phone + (skype, glocaltalk, lycatalk) presently for my calling needs. Smartvoip and action voip use the same infra backbone so call quality is equally good.

Trust me VOIP has become really good as compared to earlier days when there used to be a noticeable time lag. Its not there anymore.

That helps, I will surly try SmartVOIP tonite as its anyway free to Germany and Canada,

this seems great so far...
