Hi Guys ,

I am having a small get together with some old friends and I am planning to throw a small cocktail party. I will be serving Whiskey and rum for the guys and Margaritas for gals.

Now I have never made a margarita at home. Can someone please guide me on how to make one? Actually making is not a problem , but where do I find a Triple sec ? I inquired about it at my local liquor shop and the guy there had no clue of what a triple sec is. Does it have a different name in India? :S Wher Can I purchase it in delhi ? Also I have a very limited knowledge about tequilla. Which tequilla should I use to make a nice and strong margarita? It should not burn a huge hole in my pocket so please suggest something which is affordable :P

Also I am tired of drinking the plain old whiskey and rum. I wanna try some different exotic recipes. Any cool recipes to go with whiskey or Rum ?

Thanks

Bluff~

How do you find BP or teacher's 50? Try scotch if ur bored of whiskey..

Chivas/Black label.... :hap2:

Oh ... actually i Have a sealed bottle of Johnny walker blue label sitting in my cupboard. Got it as a diwali present from a friend :P I love scotch. :D

But even a scotch can be a pretty boring and depressing drink. Need some cool recipes so that I can make something unique.

@Roxtin : You sure I'll get the triple sec from a big liquior shop? I will try the liquor shop next to Hyaatt tomorrow. The thing is I have never heard of a triple sec before. Also which tequilla should I use? Remember it Shouldn't be very expensive.

In times like these its always good to have a bartender friend.

@Bluffy: no idea what you call a triple sec in india. I got it from an uparket liquor shop in pune sometime back.

For cocktail recipes with an indian touch head straight to Tulleeho.com - Your guide to drinking - cocktail recipes, bar reviews, shop, smart drinking, workshops

One of my favs is the "Bikini with Burka" you can make it with

60 ml dark rum

Lemon chunks (Peel the lemon and cut in chunks of 1/4 to 1/2 inches thick) 2 tbsp

Brown sugar 1 tbsp

Proc:

Crush lemon chunks n sugar together. Put rum n shake.

Serve in a clear fat glass. and top with a lemon wedge.

You can also try the simple yet effective Bloody Mary.

Dunno much for the chicks though, you can serve them Coronas/Hienekens ( i prefer the first) with lime. Its gives a very interesting taste to boot.

Buy Jack Daniels/Jim Beam Black if you are planning to make Whiskey based cocktails.

Jack Daniels is great when you are alone , depressed and want some company. I find the idea of having a bourbon at a get together very depressing :P

Any Tequila would do unless you really have some connoisseur friend. A bottle of Sauza would cost you around 1100.

Try CP first b4 going to Hyatt. Hyatt would be costly

Jack Daniels is a Tennessee and not Bourbon. Bourbon is Jim Beam and these are the good one to make cocktails.

You can trust me in it i studies all this shit for 3 years :ohyeah:

^1100 is still costly :P Do we get a quarter in vodka too? :P The shop is not in Hyatt but its near to it. The prices are standard. Its a pretty big shop so I hope I'll find what I am looking for there.

@sarang : Thanks for the recipe mate. Will try your rum recipe. But will it not be a little too sour? I mean having Dark rum neat is a big turn off.

Sauza is a Tequila and not a vodka and no Tequila would be less than 1000 -1100. For vodka buy Smirnoff you can buy various flavored variety from 550 - 700.

And to remind you Triple Sec would hit you by no less than 1500.

Actually making is not a problem , but where do I find a Triple sec ?

Most good specialty grocery stores carry most mixers including Triple Sec

In Chennai, you can find it in stores like Nuts & Spices

Been a while since I left Delhi, but I do remember seeing a good selection of mixers at the grocery store in the Priya Complex (Vasant Vihar)

Any cool recipes to go with whiskey or Rum ?

Whiskey is better not messed around with (water/Ice..at worst, Soda), same for Dark Rum - (Coke/any other Cola) (though in favor of Dark Rum, sp. Old Monk, it's perhaps the only drink which won't leave you with a hangover even after a binge)

White Rums like Bacardi however lend themselves well to mixers, and you are limited only by your imagination

Actually the regular Bacardi is a good choice for men since it's cheap and even if your pals guzzle several bottles, your damages remain limited

As for choice of Tequila, there frankly isnt much of a choice in India..You could either get Sauza (the cheapest at 1100) or Jose Cuervo (~1.8K)

Delhi may have a better set of choices though

As for the choice of mixers to go along well with Bacardi, we usually start with mellow mixes (e.g. Lime Juice + cordial + Bacardi + Soda , oh , and some Blue Curacao if brightly colored drinks rock your boat) and progress on to what we usually refer to as tubbers (Take huge glasses and pour a shot of whatever is available at hand ranging Sprite and lime to a concoction of Jamun Juice + Limca + Grenadine + Tonnes of Bacardi)

You could substitute Bacardi with some budget Vodka like Smirnoff but Vodka doesnt quite have the character of Bacardi when it comes to a party drink

Damn .... margaritas are a costly affair :P The chicks would have to do with vodka now , I can get 2GB ram in the amount I'll spend making margaritas for them :P

And yeah I know they call Jack daneils a Tennessee whiskey but there is really very little difference between a bourbon and a JD. JD is listed under the bourbon menu in most of the bars. But anyways what do I care, I cannot afford to go and purchase a JD. And anyways I have a Johnny walker already, will purchase a bottle of signature from the army canteen.

Bacardi and Smirnoff almost same cost.

And I am loving Pune almost every kind of brand is available here. You name and and most of the shops have it.

Blasphemy :@ .... No more help for you :P

@Czar : Thanks for the tip mate. Now that you mentioned I do remember seeing quite a few mixers at the grocery store at Priya's. I visit there often. Will check it out.

The thing is that I cannot stand White Rum or Vodka. I just simply hate its taste. I have been to a few cocktail parties but never bothered to find out how they make those awesome cocktails. Anyways I think I'll give this recipe a try :P

INGREDIENTS :

20 ml Whisky

20 ml Smirnoff Vodka

20 ml White rum

20 ml Dark rum

20 ml Peach

20 ml Blue Curacao, 10 ml Fresh Lime, 10 ml Sugar Syrup, Limca

PREPARATION :

Fill ice cubes in a large decanter till the top, then add all the ingredients. Top up with limca and garnish with a pineapple slice and a cherry.

GARNISH :

Pineapple Slice & a Cherry

I'd recommend flaming flavored vodka for a lil fun.

Finlandia/Absolut/GreyGoose have some very good flavours.

Dont even bother with smirnoff.

As for the burning part goes, use 60ml shot glasses, fill em up but not completely, Initially use one matchstick and keep it just .5mm away from the liquid or touch it just a bit and before it extinguishes use toothpickes.

It'll light up soon with a blue flame. blow within 10-30secs otherwise it gets quite hot. Serve with lemon if required.

I'll post a pic tomorrow since my own machine isnt working right now.

Please be away from flaming unless you know how to handle it. It's better to go to a decent Bar/Pub and have a flamer rather than end up burning your hands or much bigger.

Well my bad if I offended you :P I know JD fans get p1ssed whenever someone calls JD a bourbon :ohyeah: But thats what I keep hearing. I have seen it listed in the bourbon menu in many bars that I have visited.

See proof : Brands

^no dude, even if it spills its not like a full fledged flame.

Its a very mild flame.

I've spilled several times on my face, hands and clothes and others as well

which usually happens when I drink too much. Also if it spills, where ever it falls it still keeps burning witha very faint flame for a short period say upto 30-60 secs.

You just have to be a lil carefull thats all..
