Codemasters, developer and publisher of award-winning racing video games, has secured the exclusive video game rights to FORMULA 1â„¢ it was announced on Friday. In a worldwide licensing agreement with Formula One Administration Limited, Codemasters will develop a new generation of the multi-million selling Formula One game franchise across multiple platforms.

Codemasters Studios, creators of genre-leading racing titles Colin McRae: DiRTâ„¢ and Race Driver: GRIDâ„¢, will lead the design and development of official FIA Formula One World Championship games for home console, handheld and PC gaming formats.

“Formula One is ambitious in expanding its reach with more circuits planned beyond recent additions in the Middle East and China. It is also ambitious in expanding its reach via technology. The digital communities that computer and video gaming creates will play a key role in further growing the Formula One audience and connecting them globally,†said Rod Cousens, chief executive officer, Codemasters.

“As a world-leading creator of driving games, this alliance with Formula One is the jewel in Codemasters’ racing crown and creates an undisputed segment champion. Formula One has gone with the best, the segment leader. It has gone to the home of the EGO Engine for quality; it has gone to the company that can host Formula One Online, to the company that is streaking away from the pack.â€

“Codemasters’ success and recent innovations in the racing game space makes the company more than appropriately tuned for the challenge,†said Chris Deering, chairman, Codemasters. “The combination of Formula One’s new momentum of expansion and Codemasters’ contemporary technology and past experience is the breaking of a new dawn for the sport, on the track and on the HD game screen.â€

The worldwide deal provides Codemasters with rights to feature all Grand Prix circuits, Formula One teams, cars, and driver likenesses.

The FIA Formula One World Championship games will be developed using the evolution of the award-winning EGO™ Game Technology Engine, Codemasters’ highly versatile cross-platform middleware technology. Its advanced graphics and physics technology brings an unmatched cinematic quality and realism to interactive entertainment.

The EGO Engine is currently being deployed in the creation of Race Driver: GRID™, the latest in Codemasters Studio’s international circuit-based racing series. Set to be a landmark release when it launches on May 30, Race Driver: GRID was recently hailed as ‘The driving game of the summer’ by BBC Top Gear magazine.

Codemasters expects the first game based on the FIA Formula One World Championship to launch in 2009.

Finally, we can expect another F1 game for the PC. Its been a long time since the last release by EA Sports. Hope Codemasters live upto the expectations.

Yipeee!!!! Fu Sony!~!@#$!$@# Thanks for nothing. It's time F1 with the Dirt engine now? ;P

Edit: Come to think of it..... OH NOOOOO!! But still..some F1 game is better than no proper F1 sim on the PC for so many years. Codemasters, please don't ruin even it even though I sense you will.

Wrong! Warthog made a great rally game. They totally destroyed CMR's hardcore-rally-sim image by taking rally sims to a all new level by releasing Richard Burns Rally in 2004. Codemasters hasn't been able to match that since then. Sure, they made decent CMR's till CMR2.

Sims are hard, take a lot of time to learn and get good at it. Most people will lose interest in a week. People don't like that. CM needs to please the masses to get the ~moneys~ in, so they now make arcade games that feel like sims. Thats what CM has done since RBR came out and thats exactly what they'll do to their new F1 game expected in 2009.

Simbin or the guys behind LFS would've made a better F1 game IMO :P I will play CM's F1 game but I doubt I'll really love it. :hap5:

I just hope they fix it right! F1 2003 was a super game, level of realism was brilliant! Hope they make a worthy sequel.

Are you sure? I mean I don't want to comment on the game. I haven't played it but it looks pretty bad to me on some videos I've seen. Maybe saumilsingh can provide us with his feedback :P

Was it as good as this? :D
YouTube - rFactor F1 League CTDP - Simracing.pl
YouTube - rFactor(CTDP F1 Mod) Vs Real F1 - Monza Circuit
YouTube - rFactor(CTDP F1 Mod) Vs Real F1 - Nürburgring Circuit

I know for its time, EA's F1 99-02 was pretty awesome and I played it a lot!

Sony got exclusive rights for Formula 1 games in 2003 for 4 or 5yrs or something. I think I remember chatting with Saumil on MSN on how we're all doomed :P While sitting on that license, not only did they make crappy F1 games but they also deprived PC gamers of F1 sims for this period. Recently they refused to cough up the big fee for renewing the license. Codemasters might make an OK F1 game but hey! at least it'll be here on the PC.

well so far f1 games made other than EA were crap ,for eg all the cars steering wheel look the same, and engine sound is no where near EA f1.

CodeMasters may have it's critics but I can't really think of any other PC devs who'd be able to do a better job with the F1 franchise except maybe Blimey and their games are way too hard core for the general gaming audience.

Wudve preferred UBISOFT to have got this.

Their F1 title (dont exactly remember the name) launched in 99/2000 was the best ave ever played, the EA ones seemed like $hit after i played em.

I played Toca 3 by codemasters and I think it is a great game.

As for F1, I have played GP4 and F1-Challenge '99-02. Between the 2 I like F1 challenge. In GP4 even button mapping seemed complicated.

It was Eidos, I believe they launched F1 for PC in 99!!

Are you talking of Ubisoft's F1 Racing Championship? A very good game and I played it a lot! I liked how EA's F1 99-02 sounded and felt in-game.....and worked online ;)
