Hi gang,

This is a config request, but not putting in the request format, because of the query below.

On a 26k budget for CPU+MOBO+2GB RAM+CABINET+PSU, which is better for gaming -

(1).

955 BE + my 2 year old 2mb cache HDD,

(OR)

720BE + new 32mb cache HDD

The prices work out similar. Which would you guys suggest. I have plans to go for a 4850+22" monitor in another 3 months. Gaming would be on a 17" CRT now. I couldn't find any definite info on how cache affects gaming.

(2).

Also, would a GP AL650AA PSU overload a 500VA UPS?

Cheers

Vinny

Anyways, went ahead and bought
X3 720 BE
asus M4A785TD-V EVO
2GB TRANSCEND DDR3
500GB SEAGATE 7200.12
VX 450
CM 335

Figured might as well compromise on the 955BE, as I could get a 720BE+32mb cache HDD instead. Systems up and running smoothly.
Fermi where are you...

Good choice, atleast for gaming on a 17 inch, the 955BE woudn't give you any sort of noticable edge. Good purchases, but why wait for Fermi? Planning a huge display upgrade + overhaul of the entire current config.? Even a cheap HD 4670(4.5k) 9800GT(5.5k) or HD 4850(~6k), in increasing order of performance, will max. most games out on a 17 incher.

PS: Just read of your display upgrade plans. Incase of the 22 inch, the HD 4870 is the minimum you should be looking at if you want full HD with AA+AF eye candy.

I am using my old 8600GT for now. Crappy card, but i can get decent fps at low-med settings at 1024*768. Planning to upgrade in March, when I will definitely go for a 4850 minimum, possibly a 4870.
