I'm looking for a compact digicam, say something like the Sony DSC-T2 (will buy from USA). Any suggestions for similar models (Canon/Nikon mainly, or other Sony)? Budget is about $350 (can go up just a bit, but not too high...)

Thanks,

KK

The above mentioned one or a new Casio Exilim 10 MP one which can record videos in Youtube mode.. Casio is awesome when it comes to compactness and UI.. Also try the Pentax Optio range, not so popular - but loaded with features.

I think they have their own lens.. Check out this little baby Its the best in your price range.. Optio series too are very compact and feature packed.. But you get good Visual Aid in Casio with more than 40 Best Scene modes.. Casio is coming up in the top 10 list..

top 10 digital cameras here A610 is a 5MP camera I guess.. and the other Canon ppl have mentioned is in the 4th spot.. so I say go for Casio.. its the best mid range digital camera around... But the prob is you won't find it easily in grey markets if you want a good price.. they are filled with Canon and Sony cams...

I would suggest Fujifilm Finepix F50fd. Its well within your budget and takes great pictures. For me, nothing comes closer Fujis when it comes to colors. They are not as sharp as Nikons but they are more than enough for any print size and computer use (How many times will you see an image @ 100%?)

I have always been a fan of Fuji's Super CCD HR and SR sensors. Fuji and sigma are the only ones who didnt get onto the megapixel race and banked on image quality. I loved my S5000. sad that it died few months back. But if I were to buy a compact or 10x + zoom non-slr, I would definitely go for a Fuji with their Super CCD sensor. I have used F710, S5000, S7000 and S9000.

1. I will buy this in the US.

2. This is for a female - which means it should be sleek, easy to carry in a small purse, and shouldn't be too difficult to operate. Don't really need any pseudo DSLR features.

3. Video is not a concern.

4. I'd like good optics on the thing - I don't want her complaining later, and I'd like her to be able to use this for a long time.

5. Do any of these cams have that auto lens closing thingy?

6. Since these are micros, they probably have proprietary battery packs - so I'd like a brand whose replacement battery packs can easily be found in India (Pune for example).

7. The Canon SD870 doesn't have an optical viewfinder. This would be a problem for a serious photographer like me, but is it really an issue for a casual photographer? The person I am getting this for is mostly satisfied with her mobile phone camera (it is a good SE model, but still...). Still, if a camera has one, I guess it is a plus.

8. How about low light performance? I know nothing comes close to a DSLR (I love my 350D), but I'd like whatever I can get...

Fujifilm z5 (in pink if possible ;) )

best sensor amongst the ultracompacts

else the Canon sd100

^^z5 _maybe_. But not the sd100.

And she probably won't want pink or what not. I think standard silver/black (combo thereof) will do.

try Casio Card models.. They are the sleekest and looks sexy :D

see here But no optical viewfinder :(

suits well for a casual photographer.. Visual appeal is too good.

Hmmm... I think I might go and have a look at some of these....

OK - let's do this: decide on one model of each brand

1. Canon - SD870

2. Sony - DSC-T2

3. Nikon - ??

4. Casio -??

I'm not really interested in pentax or olympus.... (I would actually not consider Casio, except you dudes rate it very highly)

why not have a look at sony cybershot dsc T100, (5x opt zoom, 8mp, 3" screen)...its available for arnd 300-350$s...online reviews seem to suggest its one of the best ultra compact cams. You can also check dsc t200 which is an upgraded version of T100. T200 may be a bit more expensive than T100.

^ +1 for the T100/T200.

Both have HDMI out, so easy for connection to flatscreen TV's.

Best thing I LOVE about Sony is that they are surprisingly easy to use for people less acquainted with technology, yet offer full manual controls and everything else you would need.

Plus pretty decent video recording with an HDMI out as I already mentioned :)

Nikon Coolpix P4 or P5 one if them

i got one for my cousin 6 months ago he's had no problems with it

he accidently droped it down the stairs but noothing happend to it it just got a scratch so go for it
