I need something compact. I've done some research and found two or three worthy contenders -

1. Canon's A710IS powershot
2. Sony's W50 and W70 (T series are too costly and not worth it IMO)

The merits of the canon includes a large (for a compact) Opt Zoom i.e. 6x, and Image stabilisation. The demerit which is glaring for me is the fact that most powershots suck at indoor shooting, and I plan to do quite a lot of this. Mind you I also have the D70 but its too bulky to carry around and I don't wanna look like no friggin photographer :P

The merits of Sony include great vivid colors, and good indoor quality, no graininess at increased ISO's. Bads include the 3x zoom (comparitively) and lack of IS...

Which way do I go? Any other mentionables with the 17K range for a compact camera?

I will probably use video shooting @ 640x480 too, though not much. take this into consideration...

No techcoms and their ilk please...:P

Valuable suggestions guys...I need to buy this by next sunday.

A710 IS is an excellent camera from what I've read. I havent personally used the 2 Sony's you've mentioned, but I've used quite a few Sony camera's and am not impressed by their overall quality. And for some reason, pics shot indoors always come out noisier on Sony cameras.

SD630 or if u have more budget then SD800 IS.

So this will be better than the W70 for indoor shooting? Chaos I'm worried about the amount of noise that occurs with canon's and the image quality when shooting under artificial lighting like resturants etc at night...

Now what would the approx prices here be??

I'm not sure about compacts, but the canon SLRs have way better low light performance than anything else out there. Frankly if image quality is all you desire, then get the SD700 or SD600/630. They are sharper than the 800/900 :P.

What is the technical difference between the SD series and the A series?
Also I've heard that Canon's compacts aren't that good indoors. Thats why the trepidation yaar...

You should also take a look at new Kodak C875 8MP digicam. Though it dosen't have IS, but its got unique blur detection system, which notifies you if blur has happened..
Movie mode is MPEG-4 and does not have a 1GB limit like the a710 IS, also you can use optical zoom while shooting the movie. Its also have got face detection system which a710 lacks...
DCRP has infact given quite a good review to this camera, and its cheaper too compared to a710...

BTW how much are you getting the a710 for ?

I presume you mean the A710IS cannot use the Opt zoom while shooting vids? Is this correct? I shouldn't think so...
Thanks for another option though...

Yes, that is correct...
Also you should be aware of its 8min movie limit(@640x480, 30fps) 'cause of its 1gb limit

Thanks I didn't know that
^^Chaos SD700 added as another probable. Yep its much sharper than the SD800, and the SD800/900ti are beyond my budget.
The SD800 seems cheaper than the SD700...any reason why this is so?

^^^ hitman sorry price of the a710is 14K grey

@vandal.. well, i am trying to figure out a good digicam in the range of 15k according to this thread.. perhaps, i have similar budget and requirements as were yours.. my friend wants to buy one actually.. again indoor photography is considerable.. and yeah, i am a novice to this digicam world..i have so far noted that Canon SD 600/630 - 700 are perhaps good ones.. just inquisitive, whats good in this price range having a blend of all - features and quality.. lol, i sound green, but my friend's requirement is not for professional details but yeah some good cam .. thanks..

Well after a few days of shooting with an IS lens last week, I'm all for a camera with optical IS. Frankly, the merits of IS outweigh anything else including weight and looks of the cam. Get the A710IS. Anyway here's a shot with a 100-400mm IS lens on my rebel xt at 400mm hand held. Any other lens and it'd have been a blurry mess. This pic is straight out of the cam... no photoshopping, no cropping, only reduced the resolution to something thats easy for transfer.

To give you an idea of how much of a reach 400mm(640mm eq on a rebel xt) is, here's a pic with a wide angle lens set to 19mm focal length from the same spot.
