Camera Compact / Ultra compact camera suggestions needed

I am planning to buy a compact / ultra compact camera as my second digital camera. I have a Sony DSC H2 already but I find it a little too bulky and difficult to carry around.

Looking for:

1. Good battery backup

2. Decent low light image quality

3. Good overall picture quality

4. Small form factor

5. A little bit of optical zoom if not all that much

I have not set a budget as such and would like to the approx prices too. Please suggest accordingly. Thanks.

If you have the budget, go for the Sony WX1, its the best compact camera today.

Pros
-best low light performance for its size (ultra compact)
-best performance (focusing, startup, lowest shutter lag)
-5x OIS zoom,
-fantastic movie recording mode- HD (720p)
-24mm wide angle lens, widest in ultracompact category
-good battery life.

Cons
-price (19K)
-small buttons might not help large/fat fingers.

The TX1 is very similar to the WX1, it has the same Exmor CMOS sensor which helps in low-light shooting. But it belongs to the T-series, these are ultra slim touch screen cameras, they are marginally slimmer but a little heavier (the WX1 is nice and light). Compared to the WX1, you will lose out on wide angle lens which is a killer spec for digital cameras today, the 24mm wide angle lens in WX1 will allow you to cover lot more area compared to the 35mm TX1.

The TX1 offers 4x optical zoom, while WX1 has 5x optical zoom.

Also the touch screen feature is a novelty, but trust me the changing settings and switching modes via a touch screen takes more time compared to proper button and dial based operation. You might miss out on that prefect shot, trying to battle with the modes.

I strongly suggest the WX1 over the TX1. Both WX1 and TX1 come with 4GB mem stick as a part of the package so you won't have to worry about expensive mem sticks from sony.

Yea, the MRP is 19999 for WX1, should be able to get for about 18K in croma and grey might be close to 17K.

Totally agree that the TZ7 is better than the Sonw WX1.

But, its not a compact camera, its a compact megazoom camera.

My suggestion for the Sony WX1 is for a ultra compact camera.

If you are looking for a regular point and shoot size and want more zoom the TZ7 is better choice.

The TZ7 is not a ultra compact camera by any stretch of imagination.

Also i have personally used all the cams that are being discussion in this thread
so far, the WX1, the TX1, the TZ7 and now the Panny FZ35. :)

FYI( I am a proud owner of the Panasonic FZ35)

Bottomline: TZ7 better than WX1 but cannot be compared, since one is a compact megazoom. While WX1 is a ultracompact point and shoot.

@Mohit, if size is not an issue for you, the TZ7 is overall, more bang for the buck. But, since you already have the Sony DSC H2, you will end up with two megazooms. Also, IMHO the low-light performance of the WX1 is better than the TZ7.
 
Well, TBH I've used the TZ7 and to me, it seems like a ultra-compact, but that's because I live around big, bulky cameras. :p

If you really want a tiny lil camera which is powerful, I'll give you another option:

The Canon Powershot S90. 28mm, f2 lens. Full manual controls including ring.

The WX1 seems great to me but does not have manual control, which you might miss after your Sony H2. :)

^^Thanks a lot for your help guys. What I will do is try to personally check the sizes of the Sony WX1, Panasonic TZ7 and the Canon Powershot S90. I actually want something which can fit in my shirt pocket :p

The Panasonic TZ7 was rated amongst the best there. Only thing still worrying me is its size.

The Sony WX1 looks ultra compact to be honest. Still researching on the Canon Powershot S90.
