Need to connect a XLR type microphone to a PC microphone in socket

Here is a pic of the XLR socket...Microphones typically have a male-out

To those wondering why, I needed a microphone for my car pc and it is nearly impossible to get good quality microphones in the usual 2.5" connector type..

the choice on XLR mics on the other hand is nearly unlimited

Question is how do i connect these thingies to a 2.5" socket..I don't think a straight pin-pin connection will help and I am a n00b when it comes to recording equipment

Zhops, this cable is available for 150/- locally

The problem is I don't think a straight hookup will work, or will it?

XLR mics need some power to be driven (albeit very low current, the term is Phantom power IIRC) ..

Not always.

If the mic is a condensor that needs phantom power, you need a preamp that can supply it.

Most dynamic mics like the SM57, 58 etc don't need such an arrangement.

^ You're saying I can plug a SM58 into a Jack Input (With the converter) without a Pre-amp? :O

Are you sure?

Yes. It'll sound like sh*t if you use the mic input on a regular soundcard with the 'mic boost' option, but it'll work. Enough for basic voice communication.

I know people who've made their demos on these kind of combos as well.

All microphones don't need Phantom power(+48V supply), also why microphones have XLR is, XLR is meant for balanced audio, but PC sound card wont have that facility, so you must have to combine cold and ground in the cable to use in PC.
