the difference is in the name itself :

air conditioner : it takes in air --> not only cools it but takes away humidity too --> some models have air filters which take away gross impurities too.

while coolers : as the name suggests it just cools the air by way of utilising temperature difference between air and water.

the biggest draw back of coolers is humidity they generate due to water and to have better effect if you keep room closed or keep airflow nearby you, you get yourself in trouble (it is as good as sleeping in light drizzle with table fan forcing air on you)

physiological reason of uncomfortable sleep with air coolers :

as the air thrown by coolers uses principal of evaporation it will be nearly 100% humid. while our body in sleep time extracts heat, water and excess salts by way of prespiration or sweat. this function gets hampered in humid air so you may not feel comfortable after sleep in aircooled area.

another danger is of aggravation of asthma in affected patients.

leaving human body aside, high humidity promotes corosion and condensation. these two words spell doom for electrical and eletronic equipments.

A/Cs take away upto 40-60% of relative humidity of ambient air that renders the atmosphere confortable.

to confirm what Switch said... coolers used to give me a body ache in the morning. you are not the only one buddy. plus my sinuses used to get clogged and i had trouble clearing them in the mornings. hated that.

As for ACs got a samsung 1.5 split fitted last year. cant remember the cost. dad took care of it when I wan't around :D. bill up by around 1k per month. will go up i'm sure if i move my PCs in the bedroom.

overall the elec bill should not be a problem as we'll use the AC only for 2-3 months in a year. I do what Switch said he does. keep it at 26-27 and let it switch (pun unintended) itself on/off.

Can anyone recommend a 1.5 ton window ac for around 15k. looking mainly for cooling and good aftersales service.

Good man! repped you...

In case, you all didnt know, O General uses Hitachi's parts. I got a O General Window AC fixed in my bedroom. I also got a Hitachi Window AC in my second bedroom. Trust me on this, Hitachi is way better in term of functionality and performance.

The reason why ppl in AC bussiness say O general is best, becoz it is a old brand which gets recognisation over the time, similar to Sony TVs, Asus Mobos and Samsung Monitors, even though, they are not necessarily the best in thier department. Before buying an AC, research it heavily over the net. I find Hitachi's AC to best even in terms of looks.

I did look at the Hitachi's AC's at the same time I bought the O Generals. I examined the finish of the Front Grill and the inner parts and I must say IMHO the O General looked better - to my eyes. You mention that Hitachi makes parts for the OGenerals - but - OGeneral have a factory of their own in Chennai. Possibly they buy parts from Hitachi and they use their own screw drivers to put it together. I liked the Hitachi "RAID 1" AC :) - the one with 2 air outlets - the price was about the same as the OGeneral - BUT - the guy at the shop said that there were complaints coming in for the Hitachi and that was what made me make up my mind for the OGenerals.

Dudes how much does your electricity bill come to? for me i have a separate meter for the AC, and during the peak summer months, i got a bill of Rs.400-500..

That's coz TN electricity rates are lower than most other states ;)

Here is the deal:
A regular (Whirlpoo/Voltas/LG/Samsung) rotary compressor window AC will set you back by ~15-17K excluding installation charges

As for the electricity consumption, expect to pay for 1.5 units (kWH) for every hour of compressor uptime....
The compressor uptime (say for one night) would depend on the temperature level you want, the outside temperature and humidity level....

e.g. In the Delhi dry May heat, expect around 4-5 hrs of compressor uptime in one night if you set the AC thermostat at say 24 C

In the muggy Chennai heat, expect a 20% lower runtime for the compressor

thus expect to burn up anywhere between 200-300 units (kWH) a month assuming you are going to use the AC at night...

I have 2 split and 1 window...

Lg 1.5 tonne split is 20,500+ extra for stabilizer n stuff

videocon 1.5 tonne window abt 15.5 + stabilizer costs
