Hello Everyone,
This heatsink comparo, courtesy-MADSHRIMPS, is Quite Simple and well organised!!:P

http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=1&artpage=1629&articID=406

The best thing i liked about this comparo was that the author tested the products inside a case, unlike most of the open to air, test bench tests!!
The author does make a special mention pointing to that!!
So this makes it even more interesting to all of us here!!

When it comes to top honours, the top 3- the Scythe Ninja, Thermalright SI 120 and ThermalTake Big Typhoon are so close!!
Though the Scythe Ninja seems the outright winner in both the departments of cooling as well as silence ( its also a direct fit on K8 mobos), many here will prefer the SI 120 for its ease of installation, price, good reputation amongst TR users and that awesome TT Smartblue LED fan (which wasn't used in the test but i know many will get it for sure. A bit of flash doen't hurt if it doesn't compromise performance, eh!!;) )!!

The author has been quite fair by using similar fans wherever possible, for similar Heatsink sizes, to give us a fair idea of the actual cooling power of each contender!!

One thing still bugs me though- It seems that the TT BT performs a tad better with the stock fan that comes in the package!!
So the final result, if based on that, would have placed it a few positions lower in the final chart!!

I mean, when you buy a fan of choice, the CFM/rpm/db specs are a wee bit misleading practically!! So a slower fan might have better airflow, lesser noise than a high speed fan run at similar speeds due to better blade design or vice versa!!
so results may vary across users with varying fan choices!!

But since the TT BT comes with a low speed(1300rpm), low noise(16dbA) fan that pushes out an incredible 54.4CFM, which i feel is one of the best fans available as standard fitment, i doubt if many users will be prompted to change it(Unless they need higher overclocks or a bit of dazzle!:P )!!
So i think, it would have been better if the TT BT was placed in the chart as per its specs with the stock fan!!:cool2:

Now even after hours of pondering, i can't decide one for myself!!
Though i dig the Ninja for its cooling prowess, i can't seem to overcome my lust for that Top mounted TT Smartblue 120 fan in a windowed case!!:ashamed:
So you'll know now, what's it going to be for me!! ( Obviously subject to availability too-Guruji!!:cool2:)

Heh.

Just proves that going all out to buy the heaviest copper heatsink is not always gets you best performance.

Had a debate with some guys a while ago regarding this :P

My point was i didnt believe BT will be any better than SI-120 and rest all were saying nah its tons better as guys at XS sware by it so it must be better :P

I choose SI-120 for its easy installation and light weight( most concerning factor to me ). And the fact that BT wasent available on sidewinders :P

The NEXT HSF I buy will be the....NEEEENJAH !!! EEEEYAH...HAI !!! :donatell:

Well all those who think that the TT BT is heavy at 813g and prefer the Ninja at 665g considering it a midweight, think again!!

Ninja is 665g, HS only!!:P

considering the lighter of TT smartcase 120 fans, the smartblue 120 at 126g which most of us like for its high cfm with accompanying dazzle, and speed control, the Ninja will weigh in at 791g!!:(

So with the almost similar cooling achieved by the top 3 in our TE debates, the SI (at 400g, +126g for the TT smartblue 120) at 526g, is the lightest choice by a neat margin, for those with weight fears!!:P

Price Alert!!

Newegg drops prices for TT BT for a day with free 3 day shipping to select locations!!

51.99/-$ today only, after holding fort at 55 odd!!

This makes it cheaper than the SI120 or XP90C with their resp. fans!!

Almost the price of Ninja+Fan!!

791g is about the same weight as my current Zalman 7000cu :) and lower than my CoolerMaster Hyper 48 which is 864g. :O

Noob Question:

Why does weight of a HS matter so much? If we have a HEALTHY cabinet whose sides could hold it firm...

This debate will always go on :D.. I would never buy a HS over 600Grams. It just doesnt feel secure to me :P. XP-90 / XP-120 FTW! :P

The weight of the heatsink is not supported by your cabby. It is supported by your mobo.

So, if it is too heavy, you mobo could simply break.

no ASUS starice in the test ..... even they have tested a the stock AMD koolers and no starice .... starice S***S

Ummmm......isn't there any fan other than the TT blue led? Why is everyone going apes over that fan??
Personally, I would prefer a Ninja with a 120mm Yate Loon fan.

Ninja wont do miracles for you.

Personally i dont like heavy heatsinks and i hate tower designs that are heavy.

Their centre of gravity is high. and mind you it puts lots of pressure on the mobo.

And why to do that when equally good heatsink is available, lighter.

About TT blue led fan most peeps like it bcoz of bling bling ;)

But yeah if needed it can push out 94cfm.

^Eggjactly(As in Pizza Hut ad!!)!!:P

The HR-01 is 525g, hs only, but witha height of 159.5mm it will most probably put a hell lot more stress on your mobo than a XP90c (690g hs only+ 96mm high with fan)!!
Even if we are considerate, it will still put as much stress as the heavier XP90C!!

So the SI 120 is most probably the least stressful for your mobo to handle, without compromising on performance!!

But there are two things that i need to understand and would much appreciate if anyone updated me on that!!

Nowhere on the thermalright site do they mention the material for SI!!
I mean they mention XP90/120 as copper base- nickelplated, maybe the pipes too!! Aluminium fins!! Xp90C is all copper!!

What about the SI?? Same as the XP120??

One review say all AL!!:S
http://www.bigbruin.com/reviews05/thermalrightsi120/index.php?file=1

Another says those supports are smaller heat pipes!!:S
http://www.insanetek.com/review.php?id=218&page=2

Another says polishing the base reveals the copper!!:P
http://www.pro-clockers.com/article.php?id=77&page=2

^Funky- Please do a Base Polish Test!!:cool2:

yes i also need to know which one is best among TR si 120 or TT Big Typhoon.
and yea what material is the si 120 made up of? is irt copper or all juss alumunium?
bring us in light funky :).

I am not removing well seated SI 120 any time soon. But from that pic its obvious its not all aluminium.

Lapping heatsink is painsteaking job. Takes lot of time. And honestly i do it only when its nacessary.

To do it just to check bottom of SI 120 is waste of time and waste of AS5 :P

Maybe next time i remove SI 120.
