Hi Guys,

I want to know whether it is risky to install P4 3 ghz processor and heat sink without the use of thermal paste on a LGA 775 socket??? I am asking coz i dont have thermal paste right now and want to install the cpu.

Your suggestions are indispensable. So, thanks in advance.

Regards,
Raheel.

It is Risky no doubt, but possible.

I had run mine without it . . but you have to ensure that the heat sink is properly aligned with the proccy.

Do not in any case over-clock it, you can under-clock it if you want.

Better get a Thermal Paste as every1 is suggesting, costs nothing .

Even trying that is a risky thing... :)

@OP

be on the safer side and buy Tuniq TX2 or TX3 TIM

Thats like suicide man, CPU will heat up in no time. Get the cheapest TIM out there on eBay or from your local store atleast.

1 year back i tried running my old amd cpu without heatsink and thermal compound but it shuts down due to high temp. but i kept it on and temp was around 100-120 degree in just just few seconds and then put the proccy on flame for 10 minutes and its still working. :bleh:

if you want immediate TIM use toothpaste, else get TIM as suggested by others
Toothpaste has different compounds than Thermal Paste.

Thermal Paste: Ceramic, Metal, Carbon, Liquid Metal and compound usually use silicone grease as a medium.

Toothpaste: In addition to 20-42% water, toothpastes are derived from a variety of components, including three main ones: abrasives, fluoride, and detergents.

You can get a HTK 002 for 130 rs.I ran my core 2 duo without thermal paste for two days and it reached 75 degree just by playing videos. After using the paste, never goes beyond 55.

@MrRIG, i know that mate, just suggested the toothpaste solution if OP want to use his pc immediately, or if he have no access to TIM

When CPU would get hot the applied tooth paste would release liquid which would fall on the motherboard and may damage the CPU aswell as socket too... Its a risky thing... I have tried this thing on my old P4 system so i know what happens :P

Unlike

Bad bad, if you cannot give proper information, don't try to give such a idiotic suggestion atleast.

Came across this interesting article with toothpaste as a TIM : Thermal transfer compound comparison

The toothpaste did better than Arctic Silver :P

*BUT* he clearly states that its usable only for a very short time since it dries up, and worse is electrically conductive.

He has even done a comparison with no thermal paste. As you can see, the difference is 0.16 deg C / W . So for an average 95W TDP processor, the processor will run ~16 deg C hotter without thermal paste.

Example : Phenom II X6 1055T , 95W TDP, Max temps : 71 C

Assuming a load temp (with thermal paste) of 50C.

Load temps (without termal paste) would be 66C, which is below the allowed max temp of 71C.

So its not all doom and gloom :P
