for urgent usage, get a cheap TIM like 20~30 bucks used for installing heatsinks on amplifier needs. Use very slight amount only, as they can flow and might even be conducting.

^ toothpaste can't stand very high temperature and may even cause damage the mobo if applied improperly.

When CPU would get hot the applied tooth paste would release liquid which would fall on the motherboard and may damage the CPU aswell as socket too... Its a risky thing... I have tried this thing on my old P4 system so i know what happens :P

Bad bad, if you cannot give proper information, don't try to give such a idiotic suggestion atleast.
Hey guys, i know those stuffs, if you read my post again, i only suggested that if he need urgent and if he have no access to TIM. e.g: TIM is not available locally and he have to start his system urgently for some reason.

@panther, after being in TE for 1.5 years, i am not that idiot to suggest stupid solution. I have done some reading myself before posting. I maynot be a genius but am not a foolish either. Check the link that eddy have posted. Even there is a link here in TE, let me search for it...here it is

@CA50 you may be capable and able to use toothpaste instead of TIM but not him, he may be a noob, rookie. if the OP ask such a question, you can understand his level of expertise.

^^ disagree, no one is born with comp knowledge, at one point or other everybody is/was a n00b, so let him decide for himself. After its upto OP, he is in need of suggestion, i had one, i gave him if he is interested he can try :)

I am not going to rate my suggestion, still it wasn't a bad one

Better use a thermal compound , Im running my Q8200 for almost 7 months @12hrs/day without thermal compound on stock heatsink , it hasnt blown up but the temps do run high idling at around 65 and goes upto 85-90 at full load.
The other thing is that i dont care for my proccy as I want to change it as soon as possible its almost 3.5yrs old so im not gonna spend a few bucks on it

Ppl spend thousands on buying a new cpu but cant afford a few hundreds for a thermal paste.....Great going guys....

Also, b4 suggesting ppl to use tooth paste, why dont u better try out at your own cpu and report with the damages it will cost later:P

its a no brainer for someone who cares for his rig to use a thermal compound, this is what it is made for, it is necessary if you want to prolong your system's life.

However if someone who doesnt care for his system, it doesnt matter. After 3.5yrs i think my proccy has served me well.

All im saying is that you CAN run your system without thermal compound without MUCH risks in my experience, which is the answer to the post

@gannu thanks for referral but I really want to check how long my proccy lives without a thermal compound

^My post was meant for the OP. Although its perfectly fine if you want your processor to live a short life.

i tried to fry my P4 Prescott 3.0Ghz... ran the comp without a heatsink...temps reached 120*C when it automatically shut down...but system was stable running till 120C

this is very high temp atleast for the CPU, running proccy at this temp will shortens its life...

AFAIK CPU automatically shuts down at 105c. Why are you interested in frying CPU:P get TIM

If using TIM can make a human being die, than no doubt the toothpaste can make a cpu RIP:(

So better get a paste and bless ur CPU:)
