hi, my 7 yr old PC has died on me (AMD Athlon XP).I'm in need of MOBO+cpu+ram to go with HDD and CD writer(both are non-SATA).max budget is 10k.is it possible to get DDR3 based MOBO and ram in this budget.

Processor AMD Athlon II X3 440 3300

Motherboard Asus M4A78LT-M LE 2700

RAM Corsair Value DDR3 1333MHz CL9 2GB 975

Total 6975

Your PSU would mostly be on its last legs. So i suggest you get a decent PSU as well like the FSP SAGAII 350w/400w ~ 1.5k/1.9k or the Gigabyte Superb 460 ~ 2k.
Also IINM those gen. PC's need more +5V power than the 12V power. Now 12V power is need in abundant compared to 5V. So i would strongly recommend a PSU upgrade too.

Most mobos these days consist of only one IDE port. So you would have to upgrade either your HDD/ your IDE drive.

I would suggest you sell off your IDE drive and get a Seagate 500GB SATA HDD ~ 1.7k

Ideal set up would be,

Processor AMD Athlon II X2 250 /AMD Athlon II X3 440 2700/3400
Motherboard Asus M4A78LT-M LE 2700
RAM Corsair/Kingston Value DDR3 1333MHz CL9 2GB 1000
PSU/SMPS FSP SAGAII 350w/CM Extreme Power 350w 1500
HDD 500GB Seagate 7200.12 1750
Total 9650/10350

I would recommend to go for the CM only if the FSP is unavailable

most mobo today have 1 IDE(2 peripherals) so u can only opt for cpu+mobo+ram...

and also upgrade ur Psu at least fsp saga II 350W

Oops didnt know you can connect 2 peripherals to one IDE port. Was a n00b back in IDE days.

^^ One IDE Cable with 2 connectors. Thats very old concept and dont say you know that.

BTW @OP

Go for what DarkAngel suggested. Good balanced rig...

thanks guys.. will go with Darkangel's suggestion.

if the processor is *AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition* can i use the same mobo mentioned above ?

P.S - this rig for my parents mostly used for internet , movies and occasional gaming .

555BE is not needed for your kind of usage. Athlon's are much better for your usage IMO. Go for a dual or tri-core Athlon. Since you dont upgrade for even 6+ years you might also go with the Quad AthlonII X4 640 ~ 4.6k.

^ what i understand is more the core the more it's future proof? correct me if i'm wrong.

i have been quoted these price by Delta Chennai. prices are bit high.where do your ^ prices from.

Processor -AMD Athlon II X2 250 @ Rs2725/-
AMD Athlon II X3 440@ Rs3500/-
Motherboard - Asus M4A78LT-M LE@ Rs2725/-
RAM - Corsair/Kingston Value DDR3 1333MHz 2GB/4GB@KINGSTONE Rs1125/2100/- CORSAIR@ Rs1225/2700/-

PSU/SMPS - FSP SAGAII 350w = Not Available,
PSU/SMPS - FSP SAGAII 400w Available @ 2100/- nett. - do i immediately need this or can i buy it later

Yes, more the cores more the future proof. Most s/w are well optmized for dual cores and few for quads. Increasing almost all apps will be well optimized for quads in couple of years. Even if the apps u use are not optimized for a quad u can always do multi tasking better.

Yeah delta prices are slightly higher. RAM prices from dealers section. Proccy, mobo almost same. AthlonII X3 also seems to have gone up to 3.4k. (From TheITWares). PSU prices from TheITWares.(Mumbai)

I would recommend a new PSU for that rig. Running with age old PSU is so not recommended.

Try to find Zebronics Real Watts Pro 350w. Should be priced in the ~1.6k range.

Try other stores like Sethia, RC automation etc.... Might get a cheaper price.

You can directly check delta's prices here : http://www.deltapage.com/list/index.html

They update it once every 4-5 days

yeah, i knew it.Usually i mail them to get the quotes.
their prices decide my (higher side of) budget.
Once i step into Ritchie St. I usually go in this order Mithu computers,Oasis, Mahavir ...etc .Delta is like last resort.

I'm thinking abt buying a el-cheapo 450w PSU. I wud be overhauling my rig in near future(i believe so), at the time would be changing my current PSU - *Cooler master eXtreme Power Plus 650W* to this new rig.

what's do you think abt this?

Extreme Power Plus series is cr@p. It says 600w but cant deliver even 450 of stable power. Go for a Corsair VX450/550 or a CM Real Power 460.

i would definitely advice a good PSU now itself in lines with your upgrade path. Its the major component of the PC and i wouldn't advice skimping.

If you are planning to add something in the lines of HD5770/HD6850 then a Corsair CX400 ~ 2.7k would suffice. With your setup the CX400 will do for any card that needs only one PCI-E 6-pin connector. (Dont get the newer CX430. Thats inferior)

P.S: RAM prices are in the upward trend again i guess. If you check delta 2GB DDR3 is now 1.3k in their store now.

huh. i was unaware/noob also VX450 was not available at time of purchase.

My rig is C2D 2.66Ghz OC to 3.2Ghz +2GB + HD 4850 driven by CM extreme power.
This new rig for parents back home (usage - Internet(70%) Movies(30%) ) so there won't be GPU . Also need to upgrade monitor CRT to LCD. budget constraint

Asus M4A78LT-M LE - Supports DVI-D with HDCP compliant with max. resolution 2560x1600(@ 60Hz )

nobbie question - can this board play 1080p movies without strain or lag.(of course with HD monitor?)

^ thanks.
Phenom II X2 555 BE 3.2 GHz -Rs 4350
Athlon II Quad X4 635 2.9GHz -Rs 4425
which cpu is better in terms perfomance and to have good run for 5 yrs span.

X4 635. Definitely get the quad if you are gonna keep your rig for that long.

Finally bought the RIG

Athlon II Quad X4 635 2.9GHzQ
Asus M4A78LT-M LE
Kingston Value DDR3 1333MHz 2GB
SAMSUNG DVD-RW

Total damges - 10.7k

@Darkangel Hades - I knew it an el cheapo SMPS ,I was not there at the time of purchase.I would be jumping to SB few months(hopefully 4) from now.
will be replcing Intex PSU with CM Xtreme power 600w PSU(using it right now).

Darkangel ,Hades and all members posted in this thread in helping me choosing this rig. Thanks a lot guys appriciate all your efforts :hap2: .
