Hi guys,
I currently own P4 2.8 prescott HT and intel 865gbf
Wanna upgrade.
Cpu budget arnd 10-12k
In that price i found out Amd 3500+,intel p4 3.2ghz and P4 D 820(Dual core-2.8ghz)

Which one wud be better?
I know many people wud suggest AMD.
But with gaming i also want fast video encoding and multitasking.
Also if i go for intel dual core is it compulsory for me to have ddr2 ram?
Also suggest me a good mobo with the cpu arnd 6k budget for that.

If you want Video Editing as well as Multitasking then definitely go for Dual Core processors:

AMD:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ -> Rs. 15,000/-

MSI K8NGM2-IL Motherboard (Integrated Graphics with GeForce 6100 Chipset) -> Rs. 4500/-

or

ASUS A8N-VM CSM Motherboard (Integrated Graphics with GeForce 6150 Chipset) -> Rs. 5800/-
Intel:

Intel P4 D820 Processor -> Rs. 12,400 /-

ASUS P5LD2-VM Motherboard (Integrated Graphics with Intel 945G Express Chipset) -> Rs. 7000/-

If u want video encoding and multitasking defintely dual core. The intel one 820 costs 12.5k but the amd x2 3800+ is a lot more. im not sure if arnov's price is right, i think its 18k. But for gaming the intel processor is gonna be beaten comprehensively by AMD. For eg in doom3(1024x768) the x2 scores 100 fps while the 820 scores only 80 fps. And in farcry its 160 fps for amd vs 130 for intel. so if u want good gaming peformance spend the extra money and go for amd. And u'll save on the mobo and ddr ram rather than ddr2 so go for AMD. And remember u can Overclock the x2 3800+ quite easily.

Depends if he overclocks...
If he pushes the Pentium D to like 3.5Ghz even.. Its pretty good. Compares to a 4400+ at stock then. :/.

He'll need to buy a decent cooler to OC the 820 to that much while he could OC the x2 on stock cooling. And he can prob get 4800+ or more performance from OC'ing the x2. Call them up for the new price, thats an old one.

I have a starice cooler and AS5.
Also this i got from TE price guide
AMD Athlon X2 4200+ Borivali, mumbai Rs. 19,500/- 23-02-2006
AMD Opteron 144 Socket 939 Borivali, mumbai Rs, 9,000 /- 23-02-2006
AMD Opteron 146 Socket 939 Borivali, mumbai Rs. 11,250/- 23-02-2006
AMD Opteron 165 Dual-core (Socket 939) Borivali, Mumbai Rs. 17,750/-
Also fine i can max my cpu budget to 17k max,but i want this Cpu rocking for the next 2 years

^^ Umm sorry the last Opty 165 @ mnemonics already sold. Expect a new stock in around 20-22 days but that would cost 18k+. Even the last one was sold for 18.5k. :)

i'd say go for opty 146 if u wont do such heavy encoding.
afaik : normally ppls say i wille dit and stuffs but a few use it like tht i mean as professionally so if editing is ur prof or u edit a lot go for dual core else opty 146 is ur best bet.

Umm no i am not a professional video editor or something.I meant casual video encoding like movie encoding and stuff.
Basically i want gaming,casual encoding.
Wont X2 3800+ come within 17k?
But as it is 2ghz,currently wont even a 3700+ single core beat it?

Well if the X2 4200+ is for 19.5k the X2 3800+ should be around 17k. With the starice it will be a great combo. But as x86 said if ur not into heavy encoding jus get an opty 144 or 146.

Its 2 Ghz but two cores. The 3700+ is 2.2 Ghz. In single threaded apps it will beat the X2 but in multithreaded ones the X2 will be more than 50% faster. And remember u can OC it to say 2.4 Ghz with ur Starice.

I'd suggest a 146 with a decent nF4 board. Good enuf for gaming and occasional vid encoding...Also the 1MB cache helps for such tasks.

Sorry guys!!:cool2:
The dummy has a query??:cool2:
Does a DC CPU show real time advantage in gaming and Casual video encoding over a single core OCed proccy??:S
I mean, how will an OPTY146, The cheapest OPTY DC and cheapest X2 compare??:)
Gosh, i don't even know the cheapest in each category!!:ashamed:
I guess there will be cheapest in each and varying cache size too!!:S :S :ashamed:

Thank you very very much Dipdude!!:hap2:

You are an absolute darling!!:D

And the amount of stuff you post everyday, that would take me ages to do!!:ashamed:

I have just one grouse!!:(

I think i will request the Mods to Change your tag to INFO GURU!!:eek:hyeah:

News poster feels like a serious under-appreciation of your efforts!!:p
