Crossroads Mylar LBi user review

So I finally got my hands on the Crossroads Mylar One LBi. This one is very similar to the X3i earphone also made by Crossroads. There will be quite a few X3i owners after the Jaben contest. But I don't think anyone here has an LBi as yet, so I decided to get the LBi and see how it sounds. :)

Please note the earphones are not burned in yet. I will update once they are fully burned in.

I will be testing these with my earlier Mylar X3 earphones from the same company. The earlier earphones were lacking in bass but had a fantastic midrange and the soundstage was simply awesome (A earphone/headphone is said to have a good soundstage if you can clearly pick out the different instruments being played when listen to music.)

The newer series of earphones from Crossroads - X3i, LBi, XBi were designed to try and match the sound of the old X3 but with much more substantial bass. So I was worried that the wonderful soundstage and midrange of the X3 would be missing in the new LBi.

Specifications :

Type: Stereo In-ear earphone
Driver: 10mm Mylar Speaker
Sensitivity: 95 ± 4dB/mW
Impedance: 16 Ω
Frequency response: 20Hz – 22KHz

Build quality :

There were initially many concerns on the build quality of the new Mylar earphones. The wire used to break, the sound in one channel would suddenly go off etc. However Crossroads did not sit idle and they improved their build quality. So now reported problems are rare. Hopefully mine are the new build and I won't have any problems. :bleh:

One point I have to mention is that the plug of the LBi is smaller than the old plug of the X3. So its not easy to grip and pull it out of the source player and I fear I may yank the cable instead of the plug and cause the cable to break.

Package contents :

Here is the overall packaging :

The inside contains this pouch containing the earphones and the silicon tips.

A change from the old Mylar X3 packaging is the inclusion of the new bi-flanged tip which is considered to provide better isolation. Unfortunately I have small ears and only the smallest tips fit my ears comfortably.

It contains an airline adapter for listing to in-flight music on planes. Crossroads used to provide a cable wrapper but they have discontinued it.

The carry case is nice and sturdy and quite light unlike the previous case with my X3.

Here is the full package -

Sound quality :

Well the main point of buying a earphone is its sound quality.

As most earphone reviews go, this is entirely subjective since no two ears are equal. So please keep that in mind.

Few tracks I used to test the player - ( These are high quality MP3 with the lowest quality Mp3 is a 160 kbps file)
Roxette - Fading like a flower.
Acapella - Awesome God
Alan Parson's project - Eye in the sky
Westlife - Us against the world
James Blunt - Wisemen

The source was my Sandisk Express Mp3 player and I turned off the equalizer.
The first thing you notice is the bass when you put on the LBi ! A huge change from the X3 !

But that nice feeling quickly went as I realized the bass is boomy and nothing like the tight bass that the X3 had. In fact I realize now why people called the bass on the new Mylars - X3i, LBi and XBi as 'muddy' as it clouds the midrange.

I was forced to use the custom EQ to reduce the bass by 1 and increase the midrange by 1. The sound was now much more balanced and enjoyable. The soundstage that I feared was missing in the new LBi was there and it was as good as the X3. It was so easy to position the instruments and you can imagine yourself sitting in front of a band and picture where each member was !

The midrange was a bid laid back compared to the X3 and were not coming out too well. I pushed up the EQ to compensate but it was still not as good as the X3.

The bass was a no contest as the X3 had hardly any bass though the bass was tight. For a majority of music, the bass would seem sufficient but listing to Roxette and the Eye in the Sky, the lack of bass from the X3 immediately hits you. No such problem for the LBi though and all the test tracks were beautiful. I however am hoping that the bass gets a bit tighter after a burn in.

The Treble was not too good on the LBi. I felt they were muddy and lacked detail. The X3 were a bit better in this regard. I suppose the bass muffles the treble on the LBi.

The isolation of both the X3 and the X3i are awesome and I use them extensively when traveling by train to work everyday. And apart from the isolation they are very comfortable to boot and I can wear them for hours together without discomfort.

So will I sell off the X3 and keep the LBi ?

I would say yes ! The X3 are still amazing earphones and the clarity is simply awesome ! But the bass is just a tad less than what suits me and so I have to say goodbye to my X3.

Oh and before I forget I got this also with the package -

Its a Crossroads Pro portable amp. It is quite small actually though in this pic it looks rather big.

After adding the amp, I found no discernible difference with the X3. With the LBi however the bass gets a little bit tighter and the mids get slightly less laid back. Its quite subtle actually but its noticeable and improves the sound somewhat.

The amp is not too big either and I can easily keep it in my shirt pocket along with the player.

Conclusion :

So all in all this is a great portable system. It sounds great and has the much better bass than my old EP-630 while still having most of great midrange and treble of the X3. The amp does make the whole system bulky but since it improves the sound a bit its fine with me if i take it along. Also its volume knob is far easier to use than the volume buttons on my Sandisk Express player. This one is staying with me for a long time now. :hap2:

I paid a total of SG $99 (approx Rs 3000) coz my sisters boyfriend got these for me when he came down from Singapore (he has definitely got into my good graces ! :ohyeah: )

Sorry for the inconsistent pics. Some pics I used a tripod. After a while however I got a bit fed up and used a flash.

I also hope Stalker doesn't mind but I used his review as a reference since I really had no idea how to structure the review. :ashamed:

Comments and criticisms are most welcome since this is my first product review. :)

nice stuff
i have the x3i (after the contest ofcourse :P) and few things::
first of all, the package did include the cable wrap (this was 2nd week may)
they sound really good...the bass is nice and tight and doesnot drown out the rest of the spectrum
the highs may seem a little shrill in some tracks(i can spot that in 2 i think)
the double flanged ones fall off rather easily....i lost one of mine while taking the earbuds out of my pocket :(

anyways, can you mention what jaben says about the difference between the x3i and lbi??
initially they do have overpowering bass but burning them in solves those issues

Thanks for the feedback.

@Pappu - Actually Crossroads stopped the inclusion of the cable wrapper.
Its confirmed by Uncle Wilson himself !
Acessories included in the X3i package?

I certainly hope the bass tightens up more. Its just a little too boomy for my tastes.

Also there have not been too many comparative differences between the LBi and X3i. The only comparisons I could find (if you could call it that !) are here -

Any LBi users here???
what's crossroad SVi?

Oh yeah and I forgot to add that Uncle Wilson even threw in an Ipod dock connector ! He is truly a very nice person. I don't care if he is a bit more expensive than others since I can be assured he will won't let me down when it comes to replacements. Wish other business men could be like him ! :hap2:

A good review indeed but if u could've divided these contents into different pages; it'd have been much more presentable and readable; :)

Moreover instead of thumbnails, I personally prefer 640x480 res images so that they needn't be clicked upon and can present the details pretty decently [MHO :)];

U can also use bullets/numbering for making the layout even better;

Suggestions apart, a really good review; :thumb:

^^ Good points ! But I prefer a review in a single page. I somehow don't like reloading the page again and again to continue a review. (Slow internet connection to blame mostly.) :(

However the images thing is actually a very good idea. But how do I do that ???

Hmmm I believe ther's an option to take a snap in ur cam in the VGA [640x480 res]; :)

Else resize it accordingly in MS Paint; Image tab>Resize/Skew [as in Vista :P];

Enter the %value to resize it; as simple as that; :)

No no, I meant how to I upload pics directly. Not as a thumbnail. I resize pics in Irfanview. :)

Anyways after a lot of fiddling I realised that Supload does not have a direct link to your image. Imageshack.us has a direct link. So I will be updating the pics tonight.

Thanks ! :D

^^ you can use imgx.org They give you direct links & thumbnail links..

Nice and crisp review :)

as royalty for having plagiarized from my review, i demand that you give me an audition with these + the biflanges u dont use :P :P (i lost mine :ashamed: )

as posted by one of hte mods on the jaben forums

  • Mylarone X3i with the Red/Blue Rings
  • Mylarone X3i with the Silver Rings
  • Mylarone X3i Ruby
  • Mylarone SVi with the Red/Blue Rings
  • Mylarone SVi Ruby
  • Mylarone LBi with the Red/Blue Rings
  • Mylarone LBi Ruby
Ooops... some have asked what the differences are... in a nutshell, using bass as a reference, the XBi being the heaviest bass, then here's how they all compare:

  • Xbi --> LBi --> X3i --> SVi

^^ Yeah no problems ! I myself is wondering what is the real difference (if any)
:)
Ill give you the bi-flanges since they are of no use to me, but I feel I should charge you for it since you have made my wallet feel so much lighter since you sold me the old Mylar X3 ! :@

lol he conned you mate :P

what is this ipod dock connector you talk about???

and if you feel your LBi has a wee bit too much bass, i would be glad to trade with the x3i since my ipod lacks in the bass department :P

@Pappu - You bet he conned me !!!

Anyways I am meeting him to check out the X3i. If I really like it, I will exchange it with your X3i. But I am using it with the amp and the boominess is almost gone ! But I would suggest you mod your ipod. I used Rockbox on my old Ipod as I wanted to throw it out.

The sound quality improved so much that I almost cried when the ipod went dead on me. This Sandisk Express is nowhere near the sound quality of the ipod, but thanks to this earphone I can't afford a better Mp3 player.

^^i just bought it so i dont feel like modding it in its new pristine condition :P
anyways, do you have any modding links :)

and how much did the amps cost you?(all the amps you have :P )

nice review. and congrats :).

how good are they compared to the ep-630 ..cause i already own the ep-630 and find they pretty decent..but would surely love to take one step forward in the audio department.

by the way is it possible to directly pick them up from the jaben store in s'pore.

sorry for the OT.:P

^^yeah you can pick it up if you are in singapore :)

and believe me, its hard to explain the step up from anything sub 1k to this ..... too good :)

i can compare them to cx300s since i have some coming my way 30th july (a friend's actually ) :P

^^ hmm was thinking of creating a separate thread. but i guess it's ohk if i post it here as it's related to the mylars's and jaben network.. or else mods can create a new thread of this post.:ashamed:

firstly which mylar one x3i,xbi,lbi there are so many:S

main usage: music on ipod nano 3G,

genre: mostly 70% electronic\trance. rest hip-hop/bollywood.

also there are bundles like IEM+amp+ipod dock etc which is for SG 99$

is it possible to only get the headphones ?

is the amp really needed with the pod. and what is the use of ipod dock ?

ive just told dad about the shop and given him the address ..he will call me back tomorrow when he reaches the store to know which model i need.:P

and i havent told him that the headphones cost 100 $ ~ 3000 bucks:ashamed: so it's quiet possible he might reject such expensive headphones :( let's see.

PS: if there are other model\brands of headphones @ jaben which are more suitable for my music taste and do not really burn a hole in the pocket(>2.5k) ..do let me know.

the cost like 57 dollars....if you get it shipped here its 2900, but if you buy there its cheaper that way :)
if you dont want to spend more, get only the earbuds
now since you say you have an ipod::

the ipod really lacks in bass..so its better if you got the bass heavy ones (XBi)
the bass goes::(lowest) svi<x3i<lbi<xbi (highest)
i use an ipod and i wish i had the xbi to go with it instead of the x3i

i am not a total bass lover infact i find ep-630's bass also ohk..just a level more would be perfect !

...the mids and high's more important for me ..when it comes to the electronic instruments and vocal trance .

so i might settle for mostly lbi or xbi.

and i guess it's 57 Singapore $ ? or is USD?

just hope i get a green signal from dad for this one ..he already knows i bought new ep-630 for 800 bucks `1 month ago. and would consider 2-3k for headphones as very expensive lolzz ..u never know it all depends on their mood eheheh ;)
