Mac OS Current state of HackinTosh, how well does mac os work on PC?

Hi,

The concept of hackint0sh isn't knew. So what I wanted to know is, how far it has come? I tried it 2-3 years back, experience wasn't good(AMD CPU). as the hardware support was poor. now much time has passed and I also have dumped by old hardware, so thinking of giving it another shot. thinking of using Mac OS as my Main Operation system.

So I wanted to know from existing hackint0sh users, how is your experience of running Mac OS on Non-Apple PC/Laptops. Is it worth the initial trouble? Would recommended to other people to switch if their hardware seems to supported.

Here is my hardware config, which seems well supported(going by HCL)

  • Intel E5300
  • Gigabyte G31-2SL
  • 2GB RAM
  • Nvidia 9600GSO
  • 500GB Sata HDD
  • Currently runs Linux 64but.

Currently typing from mac on a pc. :) Sleep/resume works without any problems. My cpu fan always is at 100% speed(even in windows), so don't know about that.

Cool, thanks for confirmation.

100% fan speed at all times would make hell of a noise. Any workarounds?

Lastly, previously I tried with Kalyway distro on different hardware(AMD).but I see many people suggesting that MAC OS should installed using Retail Untouched DVD + chameleon bootloader and it would run just fine. Another advantage I read is they say, software updates work. is that true? please have a look at my hardware and suggest which method should I go for?

Lastly, I hope dual booting is still possible.

I am not suggesting fan runs at 100% in mac only. Unfortunately my p55 gd65 runs all 3 pin fans at 100%. I use scythe slipstream which doesn't make a lot of noise. If you have got your fan running at slower speed in windows, there are good chances that it would be the same in mac. I ahave used retail dvd + chameleon boot loader. Sotware update works without any problems. I had to delete sleepenabler.kext to update my 10.6 to 10.6.4 What your system config? cpu, mobo and gpu? Intel, + nvidia has got the best chances.

You could also try vmware before actual install. I have SL installed in vmware and works well. Except it doesn't shutdown cleanly.

you missed, i posted them in first post itself:P

I think I would try it directly, which version should I try. Latest or should I try a older version and then upgrade via Apple Software Updater? From source that cannot be named here, I am able to get "Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (Final Retail)" with size of 6.13 GiB. Should I go ahead with this?

You currently have the "right system". I have installed mac on many intel dual core systems and worked flawlessly. I too own 9600GSO, so should not be a problem. If you could get access to a 10.6.4 retail dvd, go with the latest one. If not, you could update later on after installation and configuration. The version I have got is snowleopard_10a432_userdvd which is 7.23gb. And I am triple booting with windows 7, linux and mac. Make sure that mac is the last installation, though if you prefer you could partition first with mac dvd. Don't forget to have right values in bios, like ahci enabled.

Cool, I have started the Download. it would take a while on my 512kbps connection:|

btw, how much diskspace would I need? this is my current partition structure, And I am thinking of install mac on first partition(50GB), removing windows 7 in process. I hope I don't have to formot whole disk to GPT layout and mac could handle MS-dos styles partition table.

well there are still issues with AMD.. but now it is with chipsets.. sata drives simply dont work over hachintosh projects.

understood that after wasting ~20Gb bandwidth on downloading various distros..

try iDeneb and Leo4all, those seem to have a considerable amount of documentation online for troubleshooting.

as for whether you hardware is compatible or not...

refer to this...

there are many lists with respective to distro you may want to try.

http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

that was in general for other users..

your cpu board would be compatible imo :P

Btw, I have original Apple Snow Leopard retail DVD version 10.4, can I use that to install and later upgrade to latest version(10.6) can that be done?

It would safe me lot of hassle.

Is that really true?

err, that was about amd chipset..

sata drives if used with amd chipset are known to not work.

i tried a lot of configs with ide emulation native ide etc etc ut no use..

at least so was the case uptil OSX86 V10.5.7

gave up trying after that :P

Er, Snow leopard is 10.6, either you have that, or you have Tiger, which is 10.4. Upgrading from Tiger to SL is a pain even on actual Macs, let alone hackint0shes.

Btw, After the SL release, its quite easy to hackint0sh Intel Chipset based mobos, no need for distros. Pop in Chameleon or some other Bootloader, and Install via Snow Leopard Retail DVD (Pay for it, you fools, its only INR 1800)

Friend of mine has already hackint0shed 4 comps (3x x58s and 1xh55) the past month the same way, hopefully some of you guys will get similarly lucky.

Edit: For all you AMD peeps, I think there's a Hazard Version of 10.6 for AMD's, but I haven't really looked into it, so you might have to test it out for yourselves.

mind your language please?
I hardly think using the word fools is harsh in any terms, maybe I should have used a :P smiley after it? But if one is offended by "fools" then firstly, apologies, but it makes me wonder how one will fare with the majority of any discussion forums on the Internet.

Btw, looking at your rig, you'll be able to get everything working, if you use a Bootloader, a Vanilla SL disc, and NVEnabler (Everything APART from the onboard graphics on the G31, it works, but without QE/CI, and sometimes you get a resolution lock at 1024x768 if you use the onboard too)
