Hi Everyone,

Was on a hunt for a new pair of denims, but don't ask me why, i don't like the current crop of design from Levis neither Pepe ( i prefer only these two brands ). Sometimes, the pockets are depicting unusual designs, or otherwise the front ends are done up badly for eg. the crushes, and the over done multi-shades. :S
But fitting wise, Pepe Jeans fit me the best, alas couldn't find a decent design in them too.
So, i have heard this space called Mohan Singh Palace, Connaught Place, New Delhi which have an expertise in custom-made trousers & denims.

Is anyone of the members here having a prior experience of dealing with them ? Are they good cos i was thinking of taking my jeans alongwith me, select a denim fabric there itself , and get one made.

What price range can i expect for the same and any precautions to be taken like bargaining, quality etc. ?
Thanks for looking !

Regards,

Depends on your budget.

Personally, if fabric is very important to you then you will probably need to buy locally. However, there are some awesome deals at Yoox.com, 6pm.com and even Amazon.com Direct which you can avail through Aramex and perhaps still end up paying like half of their retail in India.

If you are looking for mid range stuff then the best bet would be Calvin Klein. Tommy is priced the same but usually Calvin in better. Guess can't comment because they don't keep my size in India. These jeans are usually ideal around the 5-7k mark.

For something a bit better, in fact, a lot better in terms of comfort and fabric but a bit more pricey, I would recommend Gant and Boggi Milano. Gant is priced btw 7-9k and Boggi Milano around 7k too. Both will be extremely comfortable and I don't think you would need any other brand once you buy them, at least in terms of comfort.

The only truly high end denim brands available are Diesel and 7FAM and both start around 9-12k and average around 11-14k or so. But they are good, pretty good, may be not as soft as Gant or Boggi, but definitely true expert denim.

If you want to buy online, you can find 10-12k jeans for around $60-120 in discount sales websites I mentioned, shipping etc will probably be another 1k or so. So for like 5-8k you can have something which retails for twice the price. But then you can't try feel them before buying, though the sizes are standard and usually just size bigger than Indian makes.

One of the best jeans to buy online is True Religion which retails for $172 (basic) to around $230-320 for most stuff but can be had around $120-150 through these websites during sale which by the way is almost round the year. :)

And I don't know if I would trust Indian makers with quality jeans, although some decent stuff is made in India, I doubt a CP shop would perfect it the way they are able to perfect suits at the same price point.

Also, bespoke always means more expensive, never cheaper unless you want bad quality stuff.

:)
And if you find Tommy Hilfiger expensive, then you can try Esprit or FCUK both which start around 2.5-3k or so. However, in terms of quality, a similar priced Levis or Pepe might be better unless you are ready to shell out at least 5-8k for a quality jeans.

Well, to be honest, Levis did have some good fabric a couple of years ago, for as less as 2000-2500, really comfortable. But I stopped wearing them a few years back and I don't know about the situation right now. However, you should try some softer Levis fabrics and you may find something. And for higher budgets, I have already done what I could :)

And amongst budget jeans Skypar jeans are comfortable, I did use to wear them once. More comfortable than many many Levis infact!

Does this means Levis/Pepe/Lee aren't synonymous with QUALITY ? :o

I m at a budget of 2-2.5K but happy with the brands stated above instead of designer labels. Its just that i want to try out the best in terms of comfort even if it doesn't belongs to a brand name, and i think custom would prove better.

Spykar it is.

Not familiar with the cheaper brands I see.

My statement meant that at 2.5k a Levis will probably beat a FCUK/Esprit which will probably be slightly better at about 1.5x2.5k

Like we give a damn?

I guess even the OP would agree that perhaps the only one who has contributed to this thread, if even slightly is me.

Sorry for being so late. I long back got a denim jacket made by tailors at this place.

1. They can copy anything you show them. Be it a "live" garment, or a picture in a magazine.

2. They have quite a good variety of faded denims. Rates vary as per the thickness, but not the fade.

3. Crappy rivets.

4. Ill colored threading.

5. Bad finishing.

But my experience is like 7-8 years ago...! So I would suggest this, go to their place and see some samples the have fabricated. Honestly the tailors are good, but finishing at that time was not quite to the standards. I was happy cause I wanted a short (hip length) denim jacket to ape the retro '80s rock stars. When I was different, and times were different...! :)

Sure, go and check out their samples. One never knows where gold exists.

Arvind Mills has started this new venture of opening stores which allow you to get custom denims, suits, etc. Arvind Mills also supplies fabric to Levis in India and to a lot of other brands if I am not wrong. You can try checking their stores.

How would you differentiate if the person around me is wearing a diesel/armani or mediocore jeans?

^... Look at his arse for labels without others getting the idea that you are (not) gay...;)

Spykar is pretty good. the fabric is much better than Levis. I stopped using Levis since the fabric was getting pretty bad. I also like the fit of Spykar to be better. They are not like those super tight fits that I hate... :cool2:

sadly i wanted to rep Rite in this thread , sadly cant in general :) ,, but good stuff dude ... you know your denims

@ Rite, you seems to have good know how about Denims. I'm looking to purchase Denizen Jeans from Levis, any clue how is its quality and how comfortable is it to wear? This would be my first levi's purchase, have been wearing Lee, NU, Spykar though for long time. :)

I don't recommend buying a dozen of any single brand, no matter Levis or Diesel.

Around the Levis range, Esprit has some good deals onwards of 2.5k or so.

Spykar fabric is usually better than entry level Levis, but I recommend buying at least 1-2 of each.

I don't recommend FCUK as they aren't comfortable, although slightly more expensive.

Pepe Jeans again is a bit better in terms of comfort compared to many Levis, and often Pepe is a bit cheaper.

However, instead of buying a dozen levis, I would recommend buying 5-6 quality jeans, some online through Aramex and some offline, brands like Calvin etc. I bought a superb Calvin for 5500 retail.

And during sales, most brands get around 10-30% off, so that is a good time to buy :)
Oops, I dunno anything in particular about Denizens from Levis. I mostly have Tommy and they basically just come in different fits.

But if you want Levis, then keep note that at the same price point there can be a huge difference in the quality of fabric. Good jeans cost at least 2k and sometimes more. Anything below 2k isn't that comfortable from Levis. And higher ranges are mostly imported fabric I guess, but I haven't really tried them.

I just saw the ad, Denizen is a part of Levis Signature which is not the same brand as Levis Strauss & Co. It is a sub brand owned by the Levis group. It is a lot cheaper and I did buy a Levis Signature jeans for like 900 or so once I think and didn't really wear it much. It may not even be comparable to original Levis. Lee will probably be better than that I guess.
